That's not true; trends don't change that quickly. Data is usually a year or two behind because it takes time to collect and analyze it. The most recent complete data is 2012.

Question: If Criminal X goes into a house and murders 5 people how does that compare to 5 different murders by 5 different criminals in 5 different locations as far as the map goes? The first scenario is one murderer. The second scenario is 5 different murderers.

My guess is they only count murders vs the population so in my question above both would be treated the same - 5 murders. But where would you rather live? In the one-killer state or the 5 killer state?

In the state that allows me to own a gun.

Functionally, there is no such difference, since every state has more than just one murderer. Larger states like Texas and California have well over 1,000 murders each, and most have hundreds, so, statistical effects like those tend to converge to the norm. "Mass"-slayings are defined by the FBI as incidents where four or more individuals are murdered in a single incident, and they have always been a low percentage of all murders. The difference would be 2001, if we consider the September 11 attacks to be murders.

Impossible that map is falsehood
The map represents murders per 100,000. So, for every 100,000 people in any given state, you'd have gotten X number of murders in 2011, as shown on the map. That's how we have to do things to compare areas with different overall populations.

There seem to be other factors at work here.
You're right and if you want to throw another variable into the mix most of the states with the lowest murder rates, e.g. Montana, Idaho etc also have the highest gun ownership rates.

This is talking about murder PER 100,000 people. Take for instance a city of 1.2 million people. 42 murders in a city of 1.2 million people is going to look much different than in a city of 100,000 people.

No, in a purely free market there would be no government intervention. By outlawing drugs the price is artificially driven higher and if you buy bad drugs or are ripped off or if you are robbed you can't hold the other person responsible and have to get revenge by yourself. The alcohol market today is more of a free market than it was during the prohibition era.
