Teachers and janitors can now conceal-carry guns in Kansas public schools subject to school district approval. If a school district allows it their insurers have refused to renew their insurance as the risk has greatly increased.

"The EMC Insurance Cos. insures 85 percent to 90 percent of all Kansas school districts and has refused to renew coverage for schools that permit teachers and custodians to carry concealed firearms on their campuses under the new law, which took effect July 1. It's not a political decision, but a financial one based on the riskier climate it estimates would be created, the insurer said."

"A smaller Des Moines-area insurer — Continental Western Group, based in Urbandale — has followed EMC's lead with a similar position in response to the new law... so has Wright Specialty Insurance, based in New York."

Yeah, they are making sense. The people who are carrying the guns should be well trained and qualified. There is no requirement other than having a permit in the law.

Not having untrained people thrust into situations that even experienced officers dread is a sensible idea.

Great, someone else will gladly step up and make the money they refuse to take.

That "someone" would have to be a licensed insurance company in the state of Kansas who will do it without increasing premiums.

A lot of school districts are self insured... This could be an avenue for Kansas to explore..

If they are untrained in situational response, then I wholeheartedly agree. The liability is higher. If, OTOH, they were former military or LEO, or had a certain number of hours with specific tactical training, & the number of carriers in the building were limited to a safe number (determined how, I don't know), then the liability should - theoretically - go down.

I'm a teacher w/ a CCP. I'm not sure if I would want to be chosen for this. And I most certainly know other teachers that I would feel very worried about if they were carrying on campus. But there are some that I would trust emphatically to be safe, secure and smart concerning their weapons. If the school is safer, the liability is smaller.

Texas would pull their ability to write all insurance in the state.

you mean the won't insure school for risk of use of teachers using guns. that is true of police and even people who own homes. there insurance does not cover them if the use them and get sued. That goes to specific policies like cities carry at high deductable rate like malpractice insurance. It can be had but it high just like police dept in cities carry. Standards are also part of it. College armed police are covered by it.
