Your assessement is fair and logical, and as I said in certain instances there are exceptions to the rule. Firing her was stupid! Considering that things could have been much worse.
If an employer's choice is to fire someone for breaking the rules, or losing their license and business, what choice would YOU make? Lose an employee versus be shut down by state.
And the person who set that food burning is still employed there.
I wonder if the microwave was faulty and needed to be replaced. Could be grounds for wrongful termination as the employer created the conditions for the situation.
When I was President of the employee's association at my first good paying job I worked with the company to replace appliances every year in the lounge just for this reason. I was also the safety captain that did the monthly OSHA compliance checks.

What's more important the fact that this teacher took the iniative to avert a potentially worse situation, or some bureacratic bulls****? I'm a parent, and I would have commended this woman for doing what she did.
OK, we get your point, or at least I do. It's not the topic, however.
Point is that with that teacher gone what will happen the next time cooking food is forgotten ?
Then you just might see those shooting flames and a 3 alarm fire.

So you will lose your license and business if your employee takes some nuggets out of the oven? Is there an ongoing investigation? Is this daycare in danger of losing their license? You seem to be privy to a lot of information. Firing the employee won't stop an investigation. Or is that some new rule that is to be followed?
Now back to chicken nuggets..........which is the reason whey we are here...........
I know you don't want to own a daycare business.
But let's say you own a trucking company. That's a nice manly business where you can make a healthy profit. And you've got a driver who is on the road and he sees an accident happen, and he jumps out and rescues the people involved in the accident. The state troopers arrive on the scene, and they notice that the driver has the smell of alcohol on his breath. The driver's not drunk, but he did have one beer when he ate lunch earlier in the day. The law and the insurance companies require that you fire the driver. But he's a hero, he saved those people and he wasn't drunk you protest. So, your insurance company cancels your insurance, and the DOT comes in and shuts you down. Everyone loses their job.
