WHAT VISION!! hey let's do an illegal immigration metaphor...earth with be Mexico and Elysium will be America and we will script a struggle to get to luxury...

are you kidding me? Whats the point of watching this movie when the director already gave away an uninspiring and obvious plot with a headbeating message. Is this art or propaganda?
Oh, us American's, always assuming that everything is about us.

The director is from South Africa where class divisions, racial divides and illegal immigration are HUGE problems. His last film, District 9, practically beat you over the head with it's parallels to Apartheid South Africa and the lingering repercussions. The rich are barricading themselves away from the poor while living off their labor theme is older than Dicken's, and is especially pronounced from a South African perspective.

And whomever said that Science Fiction should be political has obviously never actually read a science fiction novel. It's a genre that almost always has a political slant.

It's actually amazing that people could not know this about science fiction.

Because that's what movies are about. Ideas. Are you a hater of movies?

The point is that it seems very loosely wrapped....make the viewer dig a little for the meaning...that is what art is about.

instead he drops the bomb

THIS IS ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Thanks....I guess I wouldn't make that juvenile connection without having it spoon fed to me before watching it.

Can't I just go enjoy a sci fi movie without thinking about politics.

I wanted to see it until I read the plot synopsis.

The hypocrisy is what also irks me most about Hollywood. Like I said Damon would not be living on the dilapted, poverty stricken planet he pretends to care so much for from his multi million dollar waterfront estates.
They have had some sort of message ever since Planet of the Apes and probably before!

What was the one where each person has so many minutes to live and the clock continually ticks down but you can purchase more OR you could be one of the lucky (read wealthy) ones who have unlimited time? I kind of liked that one.

I like Damon - but he certainly would be one of the 'elite' in any kind of class divisions. We pay our movie stars way too much.

Science Fiction has always been a vehicle for addressing topical issues of the day.

Besides, no one can dispute the fact that the rich are getting richer, and everyone else is getting poorer...

Great minds think alike. Science fiction has always been political.

Here's an idea: refrain from watching movies that you find suspicious.

Man, if I were in a constant state of paranoia & anger over even something as insignificant as a Hollywood movie, I'd really start looking inward at what my problem was. That's just not normal.
