There is no "completely safe" neighborhood, city, block, state, vehicle, airplane etc. etc.

Yes, but there are definitely preventative steps that could be put into to place to prevent these things. Like for example, avoiding a family moving next door to a sex offender.

If the offender is still a danger to society then he should still be behind bars.

If he isn't a danger to society, then it doesn't matter who he lives next door to.

One problem with this reg is the broad label. You could become a SO w/o having actually done anything or it having any real bearing on safety. For example, some 18 year old caught in a sting with some LEO etc.. pretending to be 16/17. Or a virus planting porn on a targets computer.

We have a few living in our neighborhood. So what? Several year old "crimes" (don't know how they ended up with the scarlet "S.O.") and as long as they're remaining law abiding people I don't care what they did years ago.

It's the people who've never been caught that are a worry, the burglar next door, the peeper down the road, the young gang wanna be 3 doors down who's got a temper and may just trigger a drive-by, or good old Uncle Joe who burns down your house, kills your mom and brother then runs off with you to the woods. How about those repeat drunk/drugged drivers that can run you down while your walking your dog or taking your kids to school? Why don't we know where they live?

THOSE are who y'all need to worry about. Not some person on a list.

So what??? I would never want to move next door to a child molester. Maybe that's fine with you, but not with me. Some things I can overlook, but sex offenders and murders are not it.

Sex offender: the maps showing where they live and their names puts the dude or lady caught taking a pee in public like behind a building in the SAME world as a baby rapist.

So you know, it's not the offender you know, it's the one you don't because they've not been caught "yet".
But to each his own I guess, just remember you could already be living next to or down the street from several different offenders and never even know. I'd even go as far as to say (and this will give you sleepless nights) you could even have one in your extended family and not even know.
Think about it this way, prior to about the mid '90s these lists didn't exist and even up until rather recently someone could be convicted of something and just change states without anyone knowing not to mention if the conviction was old enough were not on any list to begin with.

As for sex offenders, I love how people single out just that particular offense like the people who sell drugs to kids are any better? You'd be ok with a person who hangs out down the street from a school handing out pot, coke, acid, exstacy etc. to the 6th graders?

No. And the sex offender registry needs to be revamped to include only those who are actually a threat.
Right now it's a money pit for starters and there's no actual evidence to show that it makes anyone safer.
The Byrne fund money the states get for being AWA compliant doesn't even begin to cover the costs of administration.
I can only imagine the headaches more registries would cause

I agree.
