Just another reason why everyone needs to have weapon lessons, and carry a gun with them at all times. Since the US won't do anything proactive about gun control, we all need to wear flak jackets to work, to the movies, to any public meeting, and have body armor made for young children for back to school wear.
Another, terrible, senseless tragedy....any suggestions on how to control this type of violence, which occurs way too frequently in our society?
All I can say is there is a lack in the back ground investigation- in civil service, with all due respect,( I am a military widow) the military get the job even if not qualified over any other candidate,, sometimes they really need to have an option to say NO- but the law prevents that. I work in the system and I do wonder sometimes how some folks get in at all! I am sorry for all those who died and suffered andI offer my prayers and condolonces but I wonder if my place of work is safe as well?

Many times in secure areas of a military base, NO one is allowed to have a firearm. Even security. I believe that at this naval facility, security had weapons, but everyone else was restricted from that.
This isn't the old west. The answer to old west violence wasn't everyone carrying a gun, it was common sense gun laws restricting free carry, and many others.
I don't think this should be a signal for everyone to ban guns, or buy guns.
Why was he approved to own a firearm? How are they going to make new laws if and when they're not enforcing the old ones... All these mass shooters have 1 thing in common, mental health issues. I think that the US government needs to stop focussing on taking guns out of the hand of normal people, and instead needs to come up with a way to start identifying mental cases and criminals who own firearms. Then they need to have their firearms confiscated from them.
If he was never confined to a mental institution, then he would not be prohibited from purchasing/owning a firearm. I would imagine if a psychologist/psychiatrist deemed him a danger to his own or others life, he could commit him to a mental hospital, he would then be prohibited.

What is even more sad is the fact that there are people out there so devoid of basic human empathy, that they cannot show the least bit of respect to the victims and are compelled to use senseless tragedies such as this one to shore up their position on the gun issue. I don't care if you are pro or anti-gun. Just stop for a minute and consider the event from the standpoint of those effected. Would you be comfortable with people so willing to use something this terrible simply as a discussion point to support an opinion before the investigation is even through the preliminary stages?
I would suggest that if you are so compelled to act, donate money, or more importantly time to the charities that provide crisis counseling in the wake of such events.

He shot thru the ceiling of his apartment, and he was arrested for shooting out someone's car ture because "he blacked out from a fit of anger" in 2004. At what point do you prohibited this guy from buying/owning a firearm, and commit him to him to a mental hospital.

The ban allowed this guy to shoot people unchecked for quite some time, if someone had a gun, the possibility exists that they could have taken him out right after he started his rampage and saved some lives.
