Only if your business runs on paying people below $15hr. Would be paying those same workers $10-12 today? Which that is still low for any skilled worker in 2004.
Dude, my dad's company has a ton of production people making below $15/hr. Some of the jobs don't need to be in the US and it wouldn't be that difficult to ship those jobs elsewhere or make the positions salary. To be fair, they aren't skilled I don't think any of them have a degree, but a jump to $15/hr would cause him to eliminate the jobs that he can.
So the person making $12, or $14 now, who has some skills, will they all make the same as a FF worker? Doesn't seem "fair" to pay someone with skills the same as a burger maker. Or perhaps these people will insist on a raise and need more money.
I think there will be a domino effect of wage increases.
Many people making $12-$14 an hour in Seattle are probably along the lines of recent college grads in entry level positions (either in their field or in other white collar administrative fields).
Going back to flipping burgers because the pay is the same will look horrendous on their resumes.
They'll get a bump in pay above the new min wage but I would be surprised if it meets the old percentage above the current min wage.
My field is medical insurance billing. I know people who are starting out that don't make $15hr. Anyone who thinks a burger flipper is worth that should have their head examined.

If you want to live in Seattle, you have to be able to afford it. Plain and simple.
Those that can afford to live there probably already do, and those that don't and want to move there will probably need to make a lot more that to get started.
Some of the Seattle vibe I don't get - The gray days, the cold ocean and all the hype.
It's like Asheville on steroids.
I'm thinking there is going to be a lot of young Seattlite wannabes rushing for higher pay
and ending up homeless....
But then they can put all those Starbucks coffee cups to use pan handling
Maybe there's a burger flipper out there worth $15 or even $20 per hour. I suppose it's up to how well he makes his argument and how willing an employer is to pay him that.
I don't believe in mandating wages or randomly assigning salaries based on what others make.

Because they're not worth much. Medical insurance billing doesn't make the world turn, re-heated frozen burgers does.
