Speak for yourself! I have went back in my family tree and my family comes from hard labor workers, since 1789........not one slave has shown up!
I turned up a sugar plantation owner in Barbados, but this would be about 50 years slavery ended there (circa 1880's)
There is someone who died fighting in the Union army in the family plot in NY*, so slave ownership seems to have not been something even the oldest branches of my family engaged in.
*Don't forget NYC and Rhode Island were major slave importers.
Why is he ashamed of his past, it's his grandfather's past, not his. Seems Affleck thinks his fans won't understand it wasn't Ben who owned slaves, you must know how confused the left gets things.
He didn't try to rewrite it, as Affleck is doing!
Sounds like you are being melodramatic. My ancestors were a part of a mafia, but it was near impossible to get my late grandmother to talk about that part of our family's past. Affleck isn't trying to rewrite history, he just doesn't wish to talk about that part of his ancestry, and there is nothing wrong or controversial about that.
Hell, no. My wife has complete freedom. I don't own her bank account.
Now my daughter..... She must do the dishes or get the whip! I no longer have to threaten with her any longer. She does her jobs around the house now, without asking or telling.... My slave and I love her to death.
Hahaha! I'm sure it's the other way around. Daughters have their daddies wrap around their fingers...always. This I know!
To me personally, the fact that his grandpa (great grandfather, most likely) was a slave owner doesn't really affect him negatively.
I know for a fact that my own grandpa was a racist of some sort. He would NEVER vote for a son of Cuban refugees as the president of the United States. He also would never vote for a woman. He didn't like a lot of black people.
I loved my grandpa because he treated me well and I was one of his favorite. Maybe I am not a person of principle, I don't know. I don't agree with him and I don't want to be like him. But I do love him and I will never hide this fact from anybody.
I think Ben Affleck has very strong opinions about a lot of things. He seems to be a genuine person. Maybe he was honestly ashamed of his grandpa, maybe he wants to be a politician in the future. Whatever the reasons, I think people should just cut him some slack.
I would bet anything that if Ben affleck was a conservative they NEVER would have took out the fact that his ancestors owned slaves, in fact they probably would have emphasized even more. More prof that the left wing media in this country is corrupt.
True. Keep in mind this is PBS so we know it doesn't slant left nor curry favor with egotistical actors who fancy themselves to be all knowing.

Then he should not have signed on to do the show as the entire show is revolves around searching his ancestry. That is the essence of rewriting his history. Selectively omitting facts is rewriting it.

No, I have a history line.....my lines were hard working field labor, even, women who did housecleaning, not part of the special elite who owned slaves.
Some grandmothers are vocal, while some sit silent.
I bet a lot of people have slave owners in their family if their ancestors are from the South.
A lot of folks from the North have slave owning and trading in their family history as well. It wasn't just a Southern thing.
There's plenty of responsibility to go around.
