You're right, it's a crutch employed by the right so that they can avoid discussing the issue in it's entirety, which would involve guns as well.... More politically profitable for them to just chalk it up to mental health.....

...much in the same way Democrats do with guns. That's their way of avoiding a discussion about the larger societal problems that leads to violence, some of which they help to create...

Never mind that countries where there are far less guns have far fewer deaths. Funny how that works.
Far fewer deaths or far fewer gun deaths? That's a distinction with a huge difference....

Just wait until Dear Leader issues some sort of feel good Executive Action.
The other two co-equal branches of government be damned.....

You know, even if you think that we need more gun control, we should all be concerned when a president sets the precedent that when he/she is upset that the other two branches of government won't do something, they just take it upon themselves to do it anyway....

You're not reading here then. The problem is not guns. Those intent on going on a shooting spree will find guns no matter how many laws we pass. You'd have to be ignorant to think that gun laws will help here. Those intent on criminal activities will find a way to arm themselves no matter what laws we pass. They will either steal them or buy them on the black market. These are not impulse crimes. They are well thought out in advance by people who stock pile weapons and ammunition. Schools are often the choice because they are gun free zones and the attacker knows they will have a significant amount of time from the time they start killing people until the police arrive and they face opposition. Armed guards on campuses would do more to stop shooting sprees than any gun law you can pass.

Mental health issues need to be destigmatized so that people who have issues seek help. That is not something that can be fixed by passing laws. Mental health needs to be available and people need to think it's ok to use it. However even if we got everyone into mental health treatment we would not stop this because those who commit these crimes don't always tell the truth. People are often shocked to find out a neighbor went on a shooting spree or was a serial killer because they put on a good act.

The issue is mental illness but that is something we cannot completely fix. We can destigmatize seeking mental health care and encourage people to seek help but that's all we really can do. Until someone actually does something we cannot force them into mental health care.

The left is operating under the delusion that we can actually do something through gun laws. Gun laws will do absolutely nothing. Eliminating the stigma attached to seeking mental health help might reduce but will not eliminate these types of crimes but that is something society has to do. Putting armed guards in what are now gun free zones could help because the shooter will now know they will face opposition faster. No gun laws will help here.

That will never happen though. Probably half the world takes medication for depression and anxiety and do just fine. But because of a few who go on a killing spree, people are pointing their fingers at anti depressants now. Of course you would feel stigmatized.

No, the rest of the world does not treat people the same way we do.

Wouldn't be surprised if Cheney put in the requisition, though.

The imperfections are not an excuse to do nothing, but they are a reason to remain vigilant and wary.
No one here is arguing that we don't have the right to our own opinion, but statements like those are exactly the kind of argument it seems gun-enthusiasts love to make, as if any counter opinion is a threat to basic rights and all things American including the Constitution and apple pie...

Also of course, even the SCOTUS and the POTUS are fallible. Again, who would argue otherwise (these are called strawman arguments btw).

The point I've been trying to make is that nobody here is any sort of real Constitutional scholar and as such, we should not be so quick to pretend otherwise and immediately suggest any gun control measure is unconstitutional, or that gun control advocates have disregard for the Constitution, and/or that all efforts to thwart gun violence are entirely futile.

We should give these efforts their due and allow those who are entrusted to decide such things their due as well. All the unsubstantiated propaganda and unwarranted fears about losing our Constitutional rights is effective for those who don't know better, and sadly there are too many of those folks, but clearly the great majority of these charges are just "hot air" intended to exhaust gun-control proponents to the point of giving up.

But then there is the next mass-shooting altogether too soon to follow yet again...

I'll be plickin away loading ammo this winter when the shelves are bare. Especially if Clinton makes the final four.
Reminds me of the old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished."
