The United States doesn't need allies. We have only two counties on our borders, and both are friendly. We owe loyalty to no one.

Russia is surrounded by many hostile nations...they need allies.

The bottom line is that hundreds of thousands, if not a few million Israelis can trace their family roots to Russia or areas thereabouts, and having good relations with Russia only makes good sense. They share a continent...they should be natural allies.

In a perfect world, Israel would have far stronger ties to Russia than us.

In reality, Russia is the country that Israel needs to deal with first and foremost. But Americans always think they should be in the forefront of every nation's affairs.

True. Can't argue with that.

We allied ourselves with the Soviets during WWII despite being ideologically opposites. Why? The common threat was the Nazis.

Same deal. Russia and Israel both do not want what's happening in Syria to escalate more than it already has. If ISIS takes Syria, Syria will represent a threat to Israel, and one that will likely act on it. Iran talks the talk, but has yet to even indicate direct action. So while Russia and Iran may be allies, Russia and Israel have a common goal in Syria.

I'm curious what Iran thinks of Russia at the moment. Maybe Iran will sever ties with Russia. That would hurt Russia, but imagine how great they'd feel if Israel started to like them more than us?

The reality of the Russo-Iranian relationship is that they CAN'T sever ties. It's an impossibility. They can no more sever ties with each other than we can with Mexico or Canada. Both nations have hegemonic goals over that region, which means there will always be some lingering hostility no matter how well they get along.

Dontcha like the alliteration?

Ask instead what obama was referencing when he said to medvedev ,'tell Putin, 'I'll have more lattitude after the election'

Sure sounded like obama was warming to Putin.

figure out what your president is doing before wondering about some other country.

Israel wants the Golan Heights, but Putin won't let them have it.

You see, Putin is the true, operational President of Syria now.

Why Is Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu Warming to Russia's Vladimir Putin?
Because Netanyahu is an extreme socialist who believes in state control.

“When Netanyahu was a finance minister, he worked with us very closely. He was a good finance minister. He built the correct principals and led to the growth of the business sector. The second he became the prime minister, and he put coalition considerations as the central issue, he caused us to become the most socialist nation in the world, a nation that has almost no rights for employers,” Lynn said.

“The best cooperation [Labor leader] Shelly Yacimovich got from laws she initiated was from the Likud party. The Likud built Shelly Yacimovich. The Likud gave her more support than anyone else.”
