It's got little to do with political ideology, and more to do with geopolitics.

Israel is a minor player in Syria, what geopolitics.

I just wish someone stated that it was just geopolitics when we negotiated the agreement with Iran.

Russia meets with Israel = great news
US agrees to a treaty with Iran = threat to Israel

Given that Syria is next to Israel, you better believe geopolitics, or more accurately, regional politics, is key. You'd think Israel would WANT to influence what Russia is doing next door to its borders.

Which is exactly why they should also want a more moderate Iran rather than more of the same.

You see, Putin is the true, operational President of Syria now.
Israel have the Golan almost 50 years, more years than Syria had it. No body can take it from Israel.

With Russia already delivering the S-300 system to Iran (delivery isn't complete, yet), my guess is that Netanyahu is trying to convince Putin not to complete delivery and, if that fails, to convince Putin not to sell additional advanced weapons systems to Iran. More fundamentally, given that Russia is in good with many of Israel's neighbors, Israel has a special interest in being able to influence decisions by Russia. For these reasons, Netanyahu would be a fool to not try to establish and maintain a strong relationship with Russia.

Well stated. There's no good reason for Israel and Russia to have poor relations. Russia is the historical homeland for millions of Jews anyway. They should be natural allies.

Correct. Probably millions of russian jews live in Israel today and probably half population of Israel speak russian as well. Needless to say they made Israel stronger and more prosperous. Even former Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Defense Minister of Israel Avigdor Lieberman is a russian jew who during the meeting with Putin spoke to him in fluent russian.
There is a visa-free agreement between Russia and Israel. So Russia' citizens can easily come to Israel without any visa anytime. Both russians and israelis consider each other as allies and friends.
