Sorry, that should have said state or federal agency. A local police department broke the law, last time I checked, you can still buy and own guns in New Orleans, so this gun ban you speak of is nothing more than nonsense from cops who broke the law. No different than cops who murder innocent people.
I imagine you can at least agree that we should be holding our police forces to a much higher standard than we currently are.

Which people have a right to life and therefore the right to defend that life with whatever weapon they deem necessary?

It's certainly more than nonsense, they violated multiple Constitutionals right retained by the people (2A RKBA, 4A illegal search, 4A illegal seizure). Furthermore, the people whose rights were violated were not made whole. Their weapons were not returned, they weren't compensated, and AFAIK the NOPD didn't even publicly accept responsibility for its actions nor issue an apology.

Publicly, they are already under a microscope. Legally, they are (rightfully) held to a higher standard than civilians.
