Would be the best thing this country ever did. Just look at these maladjusted, overweight and immature young people protesting about something most have no clue of. One girl (she was probably 5'2/200 lbs) suggested there would be bloodshed to get what they want. First off, who is going to shed their blood? I doubt she could climb a set of stairs without resting. These young people are lost. Their parents taught them nothing.
They do 2 years of military service and get 2 years of college in return.
Last thing we need. Roughly four million people turn 18 every year. If you required two years of service that would mean eight million more enlisted +/- in our military. Our current military has a total of 1,430,000 active duty members and it costs over 600,000,000,000.00 dollars to operate. Adding 8,000,000, to the ranks would use the entire federal budget and more.
Our military is doing fine without these worthless whiners. It is not the job of our military do the job of failed parents.

Well, that girl could sit on your rib cage and prevent you from breathing long enough to kill you.
These kids need more than two years for the experience to do any good: they need 6 yrs.

That's the real set of problems. The economics of such a thing are absolutely ludicrous. We'd have to increase the regular military size as well to have experienced command and support troops to look after all the kids.
I've seen enlistment turn some problem kids around, but it usually doesn't just fix people systematically.

The military is not a substitute for parenting. Raise your child right and stop looking to the government to fix things you screw up.

Another problem is with the largest military in the world would our leaders be tempted to use it?

Let's say only a quarter of that 4,000,000 is capable of being trained for any military specialty (actual DoD statistics point to only 25-28% proving trainable for any military specialty).
So 1,000,000 per year at best can even make the cut into basic training. If we keep them for two years, that's 2,000,000 greenies. The current accession capacity of the DoD is about 120,000 recruits annually--that's training cadre, training equipment, bunkspace, mess hall tables, classrooms, acreage to train in, hospital beds, doctors, gas, tires, and oil. Those are all costs on top of military mission operational requirements. So let's increase all of that by 2000x.
Wait, there's more. Even the potentially good troops are not that good right out of training. You've also changed the proportion of ready-for-combat versus not-ready-for-combat even when they're out of training. Currently the military tries to control that proportion overseas so that units likely to face combat are not burdened with too large a proportion of green troops. That control goes out the window.
And none of that has anything to do with increasing the ability to do the military mission. Today's military doesn't need "cannon fodder."
As has been stated, it's not the military's job to fix society.
OTOH, I wouldn't mind seeing a provision requiring all persons seeking elected or appointed federal office to have served at least two years in some kind of onerous service duty.
