President Trump will ask Congress to consider a law that would prevent new immigrants to the United States from receiving various forms of public assistance for a period of five years after arriving to the country. Trump announced this on Wednesday evening at a rally in Grand Rapids, Iowa.

Im for it. I have seen the system abused over and over again.

If they become citizens then No, and I doubt such a law would be pass the smell test in Congress or the SC.

Well then you must enjoy watching the new guy abuse the system.

Trump's 6 bankruptcies were a form of welfare as are many/most of his tax write-offs.

It doesn't matter that this policy already exists. It doesn't matter that everyone sponsoring someone for permanent residency has to file an I-864 and is on the hook if the person they're sponsoring winds up signing up for any sort of means-tested assistance.

Trump doesn't know that, but more importantly, his supporters don't know that. So they'll hear this and think it's both new and great.

Trump is all about the show, and his supporters don't really have any interest in actual policy. It's the same reason he can sit around signing totally meaningless executive orders and his supporters will cheer him on and talk about all the great work he's doing.

That said, citizens are our problem to fix. We certainly don't need to import more problems.
Yes, we need "fix" our own problems and not borrow more.

I'm assuming someone must have told him that, I believe this announcement by Trump is just to get people on board with him and get riled about something.....even though it's already law.

He'll probably find some small item to tweak so he can pass something, but it's funny everyone is so excited about something that's already here!!!
Not exactly, some are "qualified" to receive benefits depending on their status, one being "lawful permanent residents", or "LPRs" (green card holders): https://www.nilc.org/issues/economic...igfedprograms/

I was aware that some were getting welfare benefits. Also, that refugees cost us approximately $65,000 each during their first 5 years in our country, $65,000 EACH in benefits provided by taxpayers.

My ancestors came to the US, sleeves rolled up and ready to work to build our country, not hands out asking someone else to carry their burden.

People that support this need to sit on their congress people and let them know they either start being a team member or their butt hits the curb after the next election!

It seems you guys are as unaware as Trump. This law has already existed since the 90s...

Stop and think about that?

It is also a law that is enforced in pretty much every other nation on Earth, except ours. That's why you can't just move to Canada, Australia, or even Mexico, without being summarily rounded up, imprisoned and expelled when your visa expires.

But let's not allow common sense to taint this lib rant, please, continue.

The law regardung welfare benefits for immigrants is enforced.....

It may already be on the books. Since they are illegal, crooked politicians are letting them get away with living off us. Large companies are reaping the benefits from the honest taxpayer who is footing the bill. Trump is heading in the right direction. When the meal ticket goes, so will the illegal.

Last time I checked, If you filed an immigrant visa petition for your relative, you must be the sponsor. You must also be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. You must have a domicile in the United States or a territory or possession of the United States.

So a new legal immigrant has their financial sponsor to depend upon; they shouldn't be the responsibility of taxpayers.

This is a good decision.
What's the new decision? We need some clarification since this is already the law, nothing new here.

Ten years ago I sponsored my husband. He was required to receive extensive medical exams and vaccinations, undergo a background check (which HE paid for, not our government), we had to produce all sorts of documentation (birth certificates, parent's birth certificates for both of us, etc.) and each time we sent in a packet of required information we also had to send in around $500 along with it! The price has gone up since then. It took about two years of submitting documents, waiting to hear back, sending the next set of documents, waiting, sending, waiting.

I was required by law to be his sponsor and promised to support him for five years if anything went wrong so that he could not receive any government assistance. During those five years he could have been deported if he committed a crime or broke any of the agreement.

When he got his green card/legal permanent resident, it still didn't mean that he could receive food stamps or welfare or any assistance. Five year limit before an immigrant can receive government assistance. Most have been vetted well enough that they'll never need it.

Rich legal immigrants coming to the country to retire? Haven't heard of that. What system is there to take advantage of? If they're rich, that would probably be to our advantage as they would buy an expensive house and pay property taxes and they would spend the rest of their money here in our country. They would boost our economy with their spending. They certainly aren't going to get anything for free.
