For dogs and cats, that ship sailed hundreds of years ago. They have been domesticated to the point that there is no going back

I hope you realize the cruelty in your statement.

But you are wrong. Both dogs and cats survive just fine in the wild.

My dogs would die in probably two days, so spare me

My cat has a better existence as a pampered and well cared for house pet than as a feral stray one step ahead of starvation, disease, and death by cars or other animals. That's what he had to look forward to before I rescued him. And you think I should just throw him back out on to the streets? Meshuggeneh!

Yeah; can't see my Yorkie making it either. My Westie - maybe - but now he's 11 and arthritic so maybe not.

Every single time Ringo (the Westie) ran away (I finally gave up trying to catch him; it was impossible) ~ he came back home within a few hours on his own.

Yes, he loved to explore. No, he didn't want to 'live in the wild".

Exactly. My yorkipoo cries if he's not near me at all times, his bite strength is absolutely zilch, and he's afraid of loud noises. He does not like the rain or wind, nor does he like temperature above 75f. I let him loose in the park and dog beaches, and not only does he not run away, he doesn't even want to frolic about too far from me. He is the definition of a Velcro dog.

As far as he's concerned, he belongs on my lap. Lol

And he is consistently socialized. We didn't even get him until he was a year old. Up until then, he'd been around his biological family.

Why anyone looking for a pet wouldn't choose to go to a shelter is beyond me. So many great animals in need of homes.

The last time we went to the shelter we specifically asked for an adult cat who'd been overlooked. He'd been at the shelter(which houses ~400 cats most of the time) for about three years when we met him. He's awesome :-)

Maybe because they want a breed other than a pit bull or chihuahua? That's all my local shelters have.

That's precisely what a slave owner would tell me.
