This is not a select few. Puerto Ricans in general are loud and proud of their country - they do indeed refer to that island as a their "country."
If you ask them, they have nothing to do with the United States.
That's because you (like most Americans) use the term country and nation interchangeably when they actually have two very different meanings. The United States is both a country and a nation. Puerto Rico is a country ... but so is New York and Texas and Alabama.
No, we are not misunderstanding them. Puerto Ricans call PR their country, and the independence movement has always been strong here among the youth.
The independence movement? The one that has never gotten more than 20% in the vote in the past 80 years? In the past 20 years they averaged about 3% support in elections. Last November the PIP candidate got a WHOPPING 2.14%!!!!
90% of Puerto Ricans are proud Americans
10% are not
90% is greater than 10% ... thus concludes today's math lesson.
No, nobody has ever referred to New York, Texas, or Alabama as "countries".
A proud Texan is a proud American.
You failed to understand his point. PR is a country to them, as a state is to those that reside in that state. A proud Texan is a proud american....the same way as a proud Puerto Rican, is also a proud american.
People in PR look at PR as their country, a separate entity, that is still part of the whole US......the same way as americans view their states as a separate entity, that is part of the whole US.
Pride in being Puerto Rican does not exclude them from having pride in being america....no less than a having pride in being Texan doesn't exclude them from having pride in being american.
It may come as a shocker to some, but I can love both Star Wars and Star Trek at the same time.
News flash, ALL non native americans are of another ethnic group, and many of them are proud to still be of that group (italians call themselves italian, Chinese call themselves chinese, etc).....to expect any less from Puerto Ricans, is merely showing bigotry or biases against Puerto Ricans (which have already been shown to be the case in this thread).
It's better for both parties that we help Puerto Rico transition into being an independent self-governing nation and end our colonial relationship. It might be rocky at the start, but we all have faith that Puerto Ricans will be able to look after themselves.
Jesus dude stop with your ignorance.......since 1898 to present the policy of the U.S. towards Puerto Rico has NEVER been to push for independence. That's why Congress gave Puerto Rico U.S. CITIZENSHIP and treat Puerto Rico as a state in many federal matters.......since the U.S. Supreme Court of this nation already ruled that Congress can't take away citizenship INVOLUNTARILY then you will have a tough time in the courts imposing an independence on Puerto Rico that its illegal and nobody wants.
you know the definition of citizenship? is the status of a person recognized under the custom or law as being a legal member of or part of a NATION.
Why does Puerto Rico act as an independent nation?
For example they represent the island of Puerto Rico in the world Olympics.
Because the olympics has historically recognized entities that are not sovereign as still being independent.
Officially speaking, PR is not a country, it is a US territory.
People calling it a country is really just no different than states. States are technically 50 separate entities, with their own governing bodies, tied together under the USA governmental banner. Hence why states have their own set of constitutional laws.

Because they don't identify as American at all. I'm pretty sure they fought to be able to have separate teams in the World Olympics - with no relation to American teams.
