These are due to Trump's tariffs.

Anybody who believes that a company will hire today for benefits they might or might not see in the future is exactly the kind of person they are selling the baloney to.

Nobody will make financial impact plans based on the announcement of an announcement.

They are playing you and anyone else who believes so.
Oddly, Mitch McConnell is against the proposed tariffs, since they may end up hurting Kentucky:

Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs to hit home in Kentucky - WDRB 41 Louisville News

So, on the one hand, a mainly idle aluminum plant in Kentucky will add 300 new jobs (very good).

However, the Kentucky bourbon industry has 15,000 to 17,000 employers in the state, with some worried that if the EU imposes a tariff on bourbon, it will hurt that industry:

Kentucky bourbon industry creates $8.5 billion for state economy | Lexington Herald Leader

Would retaliatory bourbon tariffs hurt signature Ky. industry?

What is the old saying? Unable to see the forest due to the trees?

I guess that if Mr. Trump had "Trump Bourbon" he would be more concerned.
Yeah, but who in his right mind would drink it? Personally, I hope my beloved Woodford Reserve doesn't go up in price. Maybe I could develope a taste for vodka.

Any businesses that engage in substantial exports are up in arms in anticipation of reciprocal tariffs.

Agriculture and ranching are two sectors anticipating a hard it.

There are winners and losers as there are whenever the Federal Government imposes on free trade.

Natnasci, all sides are trying to maximize their negotiating position here. The reality for Canada is that the USA is the best option, with the possible exception of the EU. With the USA, Canadian businesses gets access to a nearby market of 320 million people while only offering a market of 37 million in return. And the EU? After negotiating with the USA, I think they will follow and work with the USA in order to save their own steel and aluminum industries. They have the same problem with the dumping of steel and aluminum that the US has.
Of course the US is of huge importance trade wise, and on economy of scale overall, the two countries are totally different.

However, Canada is your second largest trading partner, not just some backwater you can ignore. The numbers that count in this game aren't just population.

Also the WTO rules may allow Canada to retaliate to up to over 3 billion, and the retaliation will be targeted to certain industries, products and even possibly states to get the biggest impact.

It's not good for anyone.

Take that, Trump: The WTO can authorize Canada to hit U.S. with $3.2 billion in trade retaliation | Financial Post

LAWL. Like the WTO actually matters. Canada can do what it wants. Trump will be looking out for Americans first unlike the Democrats and many drain the swamp Republicans.

Tarriffs work for the USA. That is why so many other countries don't like it.

(Personally I don't think that Trudeau is enough of a man to do anything.)

It isn't only announcements like this, but it also has already raised prices. The steel chassis I use to build a unit that, as a self-employed person, is literally my bread and butter, has already jumped from $70 each to $147 each.

That makes me think this is more than just speculation. I think the big wigs of big industry have access to inside information, and that information is telling them the tariffs WILL be put in place with 99.9% certainty.

But there is no way the jobs created by this will outpace the number of jobs lost, and especially hard hit will be those running small businesses on small profit margins like me.

It does. For instance the US lost in the meat labelling dispute with Canada and Mexico...so you guys backed off.

One can go through all the time the US and Canada have gone to the WTO and make up their own minds..but if it doesn't matter, why does the US even both with the WTO??

Tariffs can work if targeted properly and don't start a global trade war.

This situation, will not bode well for anyone. Trump lacks the support to do it properly, so he has to use his big gun and target everyone.. Messy and inept, but that's been Trumps whole presidency to date.

Trudeau will do what's best for Canada, while trying not to anger good trading partners. Having a child in the WH is not easy for other world leaders.

He won't have to. Our man-child president has just announced that he will exempt Canada and Mexico from the steel and aluminum tariffs. Another walk-back. Winning!!!

President Trump may exempt Canada and Mexico from new tariffs on steel and aluminum, reversing his original insistence that the import restrictions apply to U.S. allies as well as countries such as China, the White House said Wednesday.
“We expect that the president will sign something by the end of the week and there are potential carve outs for Mexico and Canada based on national security,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.

Of course Kitty has not responded to my evidence that the guy in the video was lying or at least exaggerating about these theoretical smelters in Kentucky whom he says receive $90,000 compensation annually. Nor has she answered me when I showed her LG washers would now be more expensive for us to buy. You're busted Kitty. You're the one bringing fake news.

LAWL. I didn't respond because I didn't read it.

But if you want to call Century Aluminum a bunch of liars that is your concern, not mine.
