Which is a travesty in an of itself, and not only due to the abuse of taxpayer dollars, but for the use of supposedly APOLITICAL institutions to promote a Partisan Political agenda.
Schools have assemblies and speeches all the time. Even political ones.
The school admin and teachers can hold whatever beliefs, and take whatever actions, they choose, but their first responsibility is to teach. They were being paid to do a specific job, they were not doing that job, and therein lies the problem.
Protesting gun law is unrelated to teaching, and therefore a decision to walk off the job for personal beliefs means that they must hire someone else to fill their roles. They did not fulfill their responsibilities to the students, parents, and community, and they are at fault.
It gets old having to repeat oneself over and over. I addresses this once with no rebuttal. It was a school sponsored event. They did not walk off the job. You can disagree with the event but the teachers did not walk off the job.

If it was the administration's decision to give everyone time off to protest guns, then fault lays with the admin. The admin decided to walk off the job, and they decided that all those who report to them should walk off the job as well. That does not make it okay. The admin should all be fired for losing sight of what they were hired to do.
No shortage of schools in my neck of the woods who have issued detention to students who walked out. Seems most who did, wear the consequence as an honor.
I don't think it's so black and white. Teachers walked off the job because of their personal beliefs about guns. That is the problem. Their first priority to is teach, and if they are unwilling or unable to do that job, they have a responsibility to ensure that a substitute teacher assumes all of their responsibilities. It is not the responsibility of the student to leave the classroom due to the teacher's decision to walk out of the classroom.
Checkmate!
This is clear and concise and exactly to the point.
It was a school sponsored event, no one got time off. You have no legitimate point here. School sponsored events happen all the time.
Legitimate school sponsored events must be related to curriculum based teaching and learning, and schools cannot decide that classes will be canceled on the basis that the admin holds beliefs about guns.
No, the option was to protest either by walking out or going to a designated area (study hall). Either way would have been participation. He chose neither.
If he doesn't want to participate he was given a option where he could be supervised and he chose not to.
Sorry but if he wants that kind of personal attention let him be home schooled.

No they do not. There are assemblies for all sorts of reasons. Many simply for an entertainment break. The school can decide what to cancel classes over. They did, did they not?
