His foundation gives scholarships to get people trained for good trade jobs that make way more $$ than most college degrees, and are jobs that are in high demand. Blue collor workers used to support the D party until it turned into the bigoted self-righteous elitists more concerned with the working welfare of illegals than of Americans.
Very few people actually think this. Most liberals are fine with trades and encourage interested people to go into them. What you do for a living is independent of the political decisions that you make, and there is still a fairly significant minority of blue collar white people who still support Democrats.
Oh yay, it's the monthly "college is useless go into trades" on here that's more about certain people's disdain for liberals than it is about reality.
Encouraging young people to go into trades might have been surprising 10 years ago, but it really isn't anymore. I remember Obama's "every student should be college ready" campaign specifically outlined that being "college ready" was important for students that wanted to go into trades as well. So obviously learning a skilled trade, or just being ready for the workforce in general, has been important for politicians of both major parties for a while.
Most of the "resistance" to the "learn a trade" campaign isn't really resistance, it's more that they want to not pigeonhole certain people or groups into pursuing them. We don't want rich/white/smart kids going to college and poor/POC/not as smart kids going into trades, because that just intensifies racial and class divisions. Rather, we should help every student succeed in their own goals, whatever they may be.
But seriously, kids should be informed of the options, and then do what they want. Going to college, trade school, or directly into the workforce does not make one better than another.
Not exactly news-anyone involved in any type of manufacturing or construction knows this. What is new is that even our media is recognizing the 5 decade long failure of our educational industry to recognize and promote skilled trades. Demand is such that a machinist, electrician or carpenter will make more than many with bachelor's degrees.
Unions teach trades such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians. They pay you and give you benefits as an apprentice while you learn. But many don't care because they hate unions.

Republicans are trying to destroy unions. The fact that union teachers in red states are finally standing up for their needs and classroom needs is a great sign that unions are still alive and well.
If you are physically fit and can pass a background check and drug test my company would make you an apprentice and within 3 years you’ll be making 6 figures. But you work OT and shift work and you work in the elements. Americans need to step up because the legal Mexicans we hire are making us look really bad.
Replace Mexicans with Haitians, and I know what you're going on about. Most of the Americans I know want to work just enough so they can party over the weekend, with no thoughts of what to do to make their life better. But the local Haitians are another story. They actually have a decent upbringing and are striving to make something of themselves.
Working in the trades sounds good in theory, but the injury rate is high and the work is physically demanding, so it's not a career path that can be sustained until age 70 or so.
Trades associated with construction and housing are subject to boom and bust cycles associated with real estate supply and demand. This is not for the faint of heart. Feast or famine is not an easy way to live.
