Most people are not fleeing due to taxes. They are going to places with lower COL, primarily housing. Housing is outrageous in CA. I'd love it if there were truly a mass exodous due to the new tax law, fewer people would be wonderful but that's just not the case. People have been leaving after having children or during retirement for years because they either can't afford to stay or know that they can sell their house for a fortune, buy something for 1/2 the price elsewhere and have a bunch of extra cash for retirement.
Last time I looked, differential in taxes paid vs take home pay has very much to do with COL when comparing different places to live.
I didn't indicate otherwise, yes many people retire from NY to Fl but the OP insinuated that part of the exodus was for jobs in low tax states. The article is pretty lacking in a the breakdown of retirees vs young workers but retirees have very different priorities. They want access to medical service, some recreation, warm weather but they don't care about infrastructure like trains and highways, school districts. I don't see any mass exodus of young people heading to Fl for jobs in spite of the low cost of living nor do I see retirees heading for Mississippi because of lack of access to medical facilities.
Retirees may not care about school districts, but they definitely care about medical facilities, infrastructure, public transportion, arts and recreation, amenities like walking trails and public tennis courts...
Many of the retirees I've met in the Raleigh/Durham area specifically mention the top notch medical facilities and the proximity to a major airport as being on their list of their retirement requirements.
We know retirees who moved to beach areas originally and have since moved to Raleigh/Durham area as they found they needed more than just the beach.
Taxes do indeed play a role. But weather, recreation, airports, roads, medical facilities, public services are also considerations.
We know a number of people who picked Cary for their retirement because of the safety (Rated #1 or #2 in the nation for city of its size. You can't turn a corner without seeing a cop.), the public transportation system which supports aging in place, the public support for arts and recreation facilities, the extensive network of walking/biking trails, ...
They are willing to pay a premium for homes in the area and willing to pay the property taxes as well.
As I already noted, this appears to already be happening in AZ, NV and perhaps even NC. So no, it won't happen in 50 years, it's already happening now. And there appears to be sufficient numbers of liberals doing the moving to make a difference in those 3 states.
I moved from New York to North Carolina years ago for the lower taxes and better economy.
In the years I've been here, I've met a lot of fellow Northerners who did the same thing.
Personally, I wasn’t talking about the retirees. I was talking about all of the working age people from NJ who have made a mass exodus for primarily North Carolina, as well as other states to the south for a lower cost of living. I have been seeing it for years. I personally know quite a few. Many of these people are democrats, which always struck me as ironic.
It’s a free country, and as I said, hypocrisy isn’t illegal.
Before you know it, North Carolina is going to have decent pizza and bagels....
...along with higher taxes.
" I personally know quite a few. Many of these people are democrats, which always struck me as ironic."
I don't think it is ironic at all.
MOST of these dems move to the Raleigh area for these jobs which is controlled by dems, what a surprise.
The article was lacking on how many and what percentage was young people relocating for new jobs, we need more than anecdotes. Who are these supposed young people moving to Fla for jobs.
If they want good bagels and pizza they will need to import some water.
?
We have VERY GOOD pizza and bagels here made by people who came from NY, etc.
People retiring don't care much about good schools or roads anymore. Yes some blue states pay more for education, that is not hypocrisy as priorities in life change as you age.
"People retiring don't care much about good schools or roads anymore."
Thank you for telling what I care about.
Hint, you HAVEN'T a CLUE and to assume you do does not do well for your credibility.
It all depends on priorities, if you like education and services many blue states are superior but if you enjoy a more rural atmosphere with lower taxes and less services that's your choice. The largest changes haven't been retirees to red states, it has been the rural/semi-rural migration to cities for jobs mostly by young people.
"if you like education and services many blue states are superior"
