Obviously since they spent money doing this and admitted the reason in their statement, there's a problem at that store. If they didn't do it in the other stores he's citing, then there's more theft at this store.
Most retail theft numbers, dollar numbers, are discovered during the yearly inventory. If a store deviates above whatever standard the corporation sets, they will take action including termination of the store managers, things like this article shows, etc.

Stores can easily identify which stores have the most thefts, and which products are stolen the most.

Edit: not implying you did not know this if you did.

So it is supposedly "racist" to take measures to stop people from stealing now?

Obviously there is a reason why Kroger invested in protecting its merchandise and it has nothing to do with racism and all to do with shrinkage of their inventory.

If locals don’t like it, they are free to shop (and lift) elsewhere.

Yes, and for a few years now. There was a while ago a story about how they locked up "black beauty products" in a retail store because they kept getting stolen, and people cried racism over it.

Because a certain percentage do get caught, since you dont know anything about the caliber of thieves and you can assume stores have similar security policies. You can also infer that the percentage of people who get caught should be in the same across stores. I guess if you knew the total # of shoppers per store then you can start to normalize the data in respect to each other.

Correct. And that's proprietary information that would not be shared with a Security Guard.

He was speaking out of turn to say the theft is no higher in that store than in other stores.

If a Security Guard or cop put that much thought into it he's in the wrong business.
