The fourth grade NAEP scores from Mississippi are a direct result of the newly installed third grade reading gate. The students who could not pass the third grade exit test were blocked from going to fourth grade where they would affect the state's scores. The side benefit was that these students were also likely weak in math, so the same students who would not have passed the reading would also not have passed the math. This does not represent an increase as much as it represents manipulation of the tested population.
