I would like to think to give those people the chance to self govern without a dictator or repressive government. I don't think those people want to be governed that way...…..
They do want a repressive Islamic government. That's exactly what they want.
That's why the secular Attaturk experiment in Turkey (and for that matter, in Iraq) only lasted as long as it was enforced by an authoritarian military, and we see it failing the moment the Muslim population gets to vote for what they really want.
...as long as they were "free" underneath someone we wanted in charge. Tends to be the US prerequisite.
The US had a window in the late 40s to have put Ho Chi Minh into our pocket. He would have still been a Communist, but he could have been "our" Communist. There had also been a window to put Castro into ur pocket. Hell, the US could have bought Castro with a lifetime World Series box seat.
I could also go with, keep your radical Islam stuff on your side of the world, don't attack American people or property, and start behaving like it's 2020.
They are useless against nay country that has even a hint of a modern AA system. Even in the recent conflicts with Iraq, they mostly were used to shoot standoff missiles. Afghanistan was no issue because they never had AA systems anyway, not any that could touch that altitude.
That's why B52's are now more air missile delivery platforms that anything else (standoff as you say). Now they carry precision GPS guided, jam proof cruise missiles. We can "reach out and touch" from a range of 500 miles once launched from the bomber.
We won't need them, because Iran would be crazy to escalate to a point where we would need them. But just in case....

I could see deploying them for show to take out low hanging fruit targets, basically a repeat of Operation Praying Mantis. Hit naval assets only. There is no ground damage, potential for civilian casualties very low, no infrastructure damage, inflicts real damage yet greatly minimizes damage to the country itself.

It's not like they took down the World Trade Center.
Now, those guys....
