Trump's defenders started out claiming that Trump never conditioned the release of military aid on Ukraine announcing investigations into Biden and supporting Putin's propaganda. On Saturday, Trump's attorneys opened their arguments by declaring that no witness heard Trump say this.
On Sunday, former NSA Bolton announced he heard Trump say just that.
Trump tweeted that he “NEVER told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens.” "Fox News began frantically suggesting that Bolton, of all people, was a secret agent of the left-wing “deep state.”
"On Monday, Trump’s lawyers resumed their defense in the Senate by arguing that there was no evidence of a quid pro quo in the “House record,” as if everyone knew nothing of the Bolton account, which was on every newscast, news website, and newspaper.
Then on Wednesday, Dershowitz announced that a Trump can only be impeached only if he acts solely from “corrupt motives.” If Trump believes he is acting in the public interest, then he can do whatever he wants.
If a Senate majority accepts this argument, it will provide the rationale Republicans need to conclude the trial, and acquit Trump without hearing Bolton's or any other witness testimony.
It will also mark the surrender of the legislative branch to the executive, and the end of the U.S.'s constitutional balance of power system of government.
Apart of the embarrassment of Dershowitz - what does it say that Trump chose someone who defended O.J. Simpson and Jeffrey Epstein? - that's an absurd statement.
1. It doesn't matter if Trump wasn't acting SOLELY for his own personal gain. If a bank robber's excuse was, "Hey, I was also sharing the stolen money to help some other people" - Would you consider that a good reason to let him off the hook?
2. A president telling citizens, whether soldiers or not, to vote for him is routine. All presidents seeking re-election do that. That is not in any way comparing to secretly blackmailing a desperate foreign government.
Oh, and about that swamp - no, most expert say that it's worse, if anything. If part of the supposed swamp is unethical behavior and criminality, well, just look at the number of Trump people who left in disgrace or were slapped down by the law.
