For the couple who picked Confederate, go back in time and experience for it yourself and then tell us what you want to pick. Many slaves were treated well, some treated like family and land was passed down to them in wills in appreciation. Although don't get me wrong, slavery was wrong, very wrong and in the North as well when it was there, as many like to forget. But to compare the two...

Nazi concentration camps had slave labor where they worked people to death; they conducted torturous "lab rat" experiments on live humans, and they systemically murdered millions.

Slavery was horrible, but I'm sorry, there is no comparison.

It becomes even more interesting, if to approach things this way.

If to look at things from this angle, then Russians actually become the most suffering people on Earth - not Blacks.

Because Russians were subjected to it all - the slavery ( better known as "serfdom,") to communism AND to fascism.

And they seem to have learned nothing from the experience.

They learned more than anyone out there - that is not to trust anyone, as sweet and enticing as those offers of "peace and democracy" might sound.

Their belief that "Our fleet and army are the best allies" was reinforced after the 90ies.

They obviously missed the lesson that freedom is better than slavery.

First world problems arguing over how bad something is that we're almost entirely safe from but much of the rest of the world is not.

Don't we have enough stuff to come together over instead of pointlessly arguing over some nit like this?

Not according to some slaves.
Read "When I was a Slave". It is a compilation of stories taken from ex slaves during the depression. Each chapter is written word-for-word just as it was told to the journalists commission by FDR to go out and find ex slaves. It was common to hear an ex slave say they had it better "back then".

I read it myself, and was talking about it to one of my tenants, who was black. She was interested, so I bought her a copy. She died just a few years ago, but she always wished she knew more about her family's history. She grew up on a farm not far from where I live and no one ever told her how her black family ended owning so many acres in the 1950's. "Someone had to be kind enough to make it happen, " she always said. But no one knew who.

But to your point, there are terrible stories, too.
