Corp America was pushed out by Democrat supported Unions that drove wages too high for them to compete, and high taxes, and Dems made trade agreements with other countries tht allowed corp America to offshore millions of jobs.
The Dems facilitated Corp America to leave the American cities, and took kickbacks all along.
The Dems created a problem, then benefitted as the corps bailed out.
So, defend the failed Dem controlled cities....this attempt fell short, but thx for the effort.
Not a Democrat, just stating that Detroit was prosperous before the auto industry. And, yes the Dems own Detroit's demise. Louis Miriani , was the last Republican mayor there, and I thought I read somewhere that even though he was conservative, he was more progressive than the typical Republican.
I'm not a conservative per say, more of a centrist, but I live in a Dem controlled city. We are consistently named one of the top cities to relocate to as our Dems haven't been corrupted by unions, the mafia, or years upon years of generational corruption as of yet. Our last two mayors have been dems though. Mayor Tecklenberg has been in office for a few short years, and he's meh as a leader. Before him we had Joe Riley, who was an excellent mayor in his 41 years in office. He didn't see Charleston as a political issue, he saw Charleston as a city, with many folks with different beliefs, and he tried to help ALL of our citizens. He did more for the growth of Charleston and why it's a #1 relocation destination year after year.
If Charleston can do it, why not 90% of the other Cem controlled train wrecks? What is different about Charleston that allows them to succeed?
Do you have race issues and police brutaility, bad schools, high % of unweb mothers, high crime, homelessness?
Austin is probably the best example right now of a liberal city on the up.
Yet republicans do complain still too many pinko leftists there, lol
I think Republican control at the state level is the reason for much of Austin's success. The "Keep Austin Weird" slogan was unique and trendy at first, however Austin is starting the see the problems of liberal cities on the coasts, homelessness, crime, drugs, inequality, rising housing costs etc. It is a neat city with great food, music and Barton Springs is a blast.
What makes those very liberal cities clean, safe, thriving metropolises, while, according to y'all, NYC, Chicago, Boston, and DC are "crapholes?"
Actually , the question is on you. 18 pages and know one can explain why these major liberal cities in our country have high crime, high drug use, high amounts of homelessness, and as we can clearly see on the news daily, many social issues causing unrest. Liberal policies should make these places beautiful utopia's like the other countries you've tried to compare to. Why are they not ?
Mayors and city counsel are elected by the residents who vote. Some of those voters may be homeless and are constituents who have more say than a police officer who works for the city but doesn’t live there. Someone who doesn’t live in the city can complain all they want but their opinion just doesn’t matter to the people who want to get elected.
The only nonresident opinions that may also influence policy is pandering to groups that are large donors or if there are aspirations beyond the city. I know the police union pacs are big contributors. Some mayors make pledges not to take special interest funding.
Why would a a mayor care what beach43 thinks about them or their city? Are you planning on running for office?
Eta: both my (successful) children live in cities mentioned above. They don’t want a republican controller local government and they vote. They are generally happy with the cities they live in and can and would move if they weren't. Why is hard to accept that people like where they live even if you don’t. You don’t live there and no one wants your opinion of their hometown.
Because a liberal doesn’t have any idea how to take responsibility for their decisions and actions.
They will happily list 50 reasons why it’s not their fault and #1 is “Orange Man Bad”
Even, deep deep down inside they actually believe nothing is their fault.
Nothing is EVER their fault ... add to that - they think their Failed Cities with burned out buildings are a great Success Story and they look down their Arrogant Noses at anyone who doesn't agree with them.
That's why they call us The Deplorables - we dare to disagree with their version of Utopia.

Again, the question is on you. Detroit has had Democratic leadership since 1957....and it is just now making a comeback, mostly in part to two individuals that lean right. What have liberal policies done for Detroit ?

No, the onus is not on me to explain. I'm not the one suggesting that liberal US cities are in worse shape than conservative ones. I don't think they are.

The liberal policies in Detroit are not the issue. If they were, why is Toronto, a mere 4 hour drive from Detroit and FAR more liberal than Detroit in terms of policy (and also far more diverse), one of the most prosperous and fastest growing cities in North America?
Think outside that box you're trapped in.
