usually historians give Presidents that wars are won high marks. Washington, Lincoln, FDR. It had nothing to do with their policies which most were bad, winning a war goes a long way. If the wars would have been lost they would be at the bottom on the list and their domestic policies put under a big light.

I would agree with this assessment. He was a great wartime leader. His Great Depression strategy however was not so good. He made the country more dependent upon government and the policies didn’t even work when it came to ending the depression (ww2 did that)

I don't think historians judge him positively for his war policies only. If anything he came into the war too late.

Downgrading his domestic policies is ignoring history. In fact, FDR restored the banking system, restored faith in the government, restored Americans' faith in the future. He actually saved capitalism from collapse and if it took many years to overcome the Depression it was because it was a terrible event. Recently we know how long it took us to pull out of the Great Recession of 2008. If Hoover had continued in power the Depression would have been horrible. And if FDR's domestic policies were so bad, then explain why his stunning electoral victories.

And, of course, he gave us Social Security which Republicans have endlessly attacked him for but which is immensely popular with the American people.

Fair point, and FDR was governing in unique, dire times.. but I view his 4 terms as one of his greatest political sins. He ignored a long standing tradition/wisdom established by Washington.. one person shouldn't hold executive power for so long. Thankfully it prompted a Constitutional amendment.. Still waiting on a Congressional term limit amendment tho

What a joke, is was Coolidge and Hoover's policies that caused the great depression.

I have, thats a old study, posted multiple times in this forum, possibly even by you.

Also, please dont say you want to listen to the economist, because there are more who disagree with then than agree. I really doubt you are going to support or believe others postings on the issue.

Mind you, the most interesting thing about your post is you didnt even attempt to disagree with me, LOL

Naw, employee/employer health insurance as a system is horrible.

1) FDR's last year as President was 1945. That means that only someone 76 years old or older was alive during has last year in office. Most people aren't really plugged into politics until the age of 20 or so (most, much later than that). Ergo, anyone younger than 96 years old has no adult memory of his Presidency.
2) History books lie. As such, unless you were alive to witness his Presidency, your opinion is probably based on misinformation. Historians are already saying Obama was a great POTUS, when those of us who experienced his dumpster fire of an administration know better.

3) It will be interesting to how many 96+ year olds respond to this thread, since everyone else's responses lack credibility (through no fault of their own).

Regardless, we're still stuck with his lousy policies today
