Hardly. He is against illegal immigration, as am I. That hardly makes one "xenophobic".

Yet, both the USA and Canada need immigration to build and sustain our economies due to low birth rates.

So, the grey... how much should immigration be increased to cut down on the undocumented people coming in?
No one needs immigration for any reason, least of all Canada. Low birth rates are the market saying we don't need more people. They are also partly the RESULT of immigration.

Typical of the left. Cant argue a point so they revert to name calling. Any time they disagree with you you must be a bigot or a racist or sexist fill in the blank, blah blah blah.

I, too, oppose illegal migration. And just read the cheery news of the latest migrant release today at Eagle Pass, Texas.

A NY Times editorial, Build a New Hudson River Tunnel from August 17, 2015 discusses the need for a new rail tunnel to protect against what Senator Chuck Schumer calls "“a regional transportation Armageddon.” As the editorial describes it "(t)he first step would be a meeting of all parties that would benefit from the project, including representatives from Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, the states of New Jersey and New York, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the federal government and Congress. Each of these institutions will have to participate, and each will eventually 'write a check.'" There is a sorely missing group of parties here the construction unions, the governmental officials in charge of "poverty" programs and "community organizers.

While Tappan Zee litigation continues relating to "the wage difference between carpenters and dock builders" where "(c)arpenters are paid $70.11 per hour, compared with dock builders that make $92.47 per hour" no consideration is given to a "workfare" program where benefits recipients would apprentice and be paid, say, $22 an hour to learn a trade and $40-$45 per our when working at these trades. The cost numbers of $20 billion to build these tunnels and related train station improvements is eye-popping and ultimately unfeasible. No matter how badly needed nothing is going to get built at those figures.

There are other projects just as urgently needed. New York needs at least one more water tunnel, so the existing three water tunnels can be shut down seriatim and rebuilt. Again labor costs are prohibitive. Other gold-plating on these projects needs to be removed, but all must participate. These projects must happen and the costs must be made bearable. While the Tappan Zee Bridge construction was ultimately completed, it took forever and was expensive enough to deter other projects.

Unless Americans are willing to work competitive wages, we must have outsiders. Either openly or on the sly.

The problem of course is that legal immigration is almost a practical impossibility.
you just laid out in great detail a union problem. A dock builder making $170K/yr with 4 weeks of vacation.

You think the union shops are going to allow either undocumented or work visa holders to waltz in and get paid $30/hr?

If the "we need more immigrants" crowd wants to make any headway on the issue, you're first going to have to come to the side of "vastly reduce the illegal immigrants". That doesn't mean some of the "been here 15 years" wouldn't get a path to remain here legally. Though understand none who arrived since 1/1/2010 qualify for this (DACA date).

Shocking that you would be using this a valid reference to support your views.
no more shocking than seeing someone use the SPLC as an impartial or believable arbiter of what is a "hate group".

oh, not so "many". However, when folks type this as if we're supposed to be the world's welfare state ...

In short, poor, uneducated immigrants without family in the US have virtually no chance of getting in legally.
then the # likely grows.

On this forum - well, really, the Illegal Immigration Forum - there's about 3 people who say "we need less legal immigration too".
