The point to taking over Ukraine is to control their massive natural gas reserves and overland routes to energy dependent Europe, but this apple wouldn't be as shiny if other energy suppliers were in a position to offset Russian and Ukrainian exports.
Putin knew we would be pissed-off when he invaded and there would be retribution for Russia, but he also knows that when Europeans get cold in the winter, past transgressions against Ukraine won't matter.
