As far as I know, this is a respiratory flu, not an intestinal flu. I haven't heard any reports of it spreading from eating food, it is spread person-to-person. The infected are people who travelled to Mexico. And, potentially, anyone the infected people have contact with after returning to the US.

My grandfather lived through the 1918 flu when he was a young private going through basic training in Georgia. He and his best friend enlisted because they wanted to fight for Uncle Sam and see adventure. One day this friend came down with the flu and the next day he was dead. Can we protect ourselves from the flu? I have grave misgivings.

I agree

viruses are very frail structures (I won't say "creatures" because it is still debated among scientists whether they are living beings or not). It's very difficult to get infected from food because:
a) Once the animal days, viruses die too
b) Cooking destroys viruses

And yeah, all of those who are sick in the US got it in Mexico and brought it to America.

As I said, those who saw this as an excuse to start their typical soft-racist blabbering have been proved wrong.

Quick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's the bird flu epidemic, no wait, swine flu epidemic... no wait it's,it's.... RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!

Really people, wash your hands frequently, try to avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose until you've washed your hands avoid going to Mexico for a while and if you do get sick stay home. Take the basic flu precautions and y'all will be fine.

An illiegal immigrant is unlikely to arrive in the US by plane or bus or any other form of public transportation. A legal entrant (as I have said before, not all are immigrating, some are just visiting) is no more likely to know who else was in the restaurant, grocery store, etc than an illegal one, although they may be more forthcoming (note use of word "may"). They may also be concerned about being sent back if they come forth, and therefore no more forthcoming than an illegal entrant.

Am I against illegal immigration? Yes I am. Does that negate the potential for further spread of the swine flu? No, it doesn't.
And yes, an illegal from sob is unlikely to arrive by bus or plane. But they do arrive by truck and/or van and most likely a several different methods. And they do not travel alone. As to people who overstay their visa? And people who are already in the US illegaly --- those two groups of people are not likely to be forthcoming if they become ill - you're right. But that is not the focus....the focus are people entering the US illegally now who may be infected now. And yes, they are not going to be forthcoming, they are not as likely to ask for medical help in a timely manner. They will most likely continue to spread the flu to other illegal immigrants as well as everyone else they come into contact with. Unchecked.
But perhaps political correctness trumps public health, eh?

Unfortunately, just the intestinal tract. It's a respiratory virus.
It may make you feel 'good' and no doubt 'morally superior' to paint me as a racist. Whatever. My stance would be the same if this were the avian flu from China. In fact, I know someone who was stuck in China for over a month due to the outbreak. I don't recall any great debate about quarantining and stopping flights from China.
I wonder why that is?
