Obviously it doesn't matter whether one is educated in a school or simply does it himself, but many do take issue with the intense anti-intellectualism pervasive in the conservative movement today. Much like in the liberal urban black culture, it is looked down upon in many predominantly rural whiite conservative circles to be educated or to pursue intellectual interests.

Left or right, I think they're both just defense mechanisms to protect the value of one's culture, but it's gotten rather out of control on the right as of late in the vitriolic anti-intellect rhetoric. So, obviously there will be a backlash from the left to protect its own values, since a vast majority of people with advanced degrees vote progressive.

'Education' or the lack of it in sufficent quantities is just one of many accusations in the ever ready grab bag of nastyness used by the left to discredit an opponent. If they can work in a lack of intellegence you get a real classic. Criticize this and their ready with another favorite. Republicans don't value 'book larnin'. The whole 'debate' is self contained. We don't even need to be there. And no, the right doesn't 'do it too'. At least not in the same way or to the extent of the left. Not even close.

I saw a great biography of Percy Julian last night. It reminded me of the fact that some of us old white guys are old enough to remember the peer-reviewed "scientific" studies of the 30's and 40's which stated that blacks and other races were inferior to whites.

Not specific, BTW. Just an example. I heard the other day about what engineers and nurses are being paid in Dubai, which was four to five times what they can make in the U.S. That doesn't necessarily mean that the standard of living in Dubai is four to five times better than the U.S., only that it costs more there to cover the same lifestyle. Same distinction between an engineer in NYC or Jackson, Mississippi.
that is why outsourcing is so dangerous for working americans. americans will never be able to compete on the global scale as far as low wages. we need to implement tariffs if we expect to keep our population employed.

americans don't want to live anywhere else, but they do want to be able to afford living in america.

it certainly has flipped, with bill clinton signing NAFTA and obama supporting H1B visas for foreigners and supporting illegal immigration. obama actually supports increasing the HIB visas level. these issues impact the working class greatly, as their wages and / or decrease with immigration and outsourcing.

that is why i say that you cannot look at the political party when you vote, rather you have to look at their voting records (if they have been in office previously) or platform.

i think that liberals gained a lot of momentum by characterizing conservatives as big business, while most conservatives are working people. a lot of liberals are rich (like pelosi, reid, gates, buffett) and they could care less about the american working class. anyone who is for cap and trade does not care about working people and their cost of living. it is all about generating revenue for big business and the government.

floridasandy has it right.

We need countervailing tariffs to compensate for the wage and environmental cost associated with made in America. This would move the factories back to this country and the improved employment at decent wages would allow Americans to buy American. Most Americans would benefit from the results and most international usurers would be devastated.

You are blinded by your own ideology if you don't think it goes both ways.

Then again, I guess calling a presidential candidate a terrorist and an "affirmative action president" is just political discourse....

The funny thing is that a good chunk of the liberals' support comes from the uneducated in the ghettos of the inner cities.....

You neglected to mention Bush's "supporting H1B visas for foreigners and supporting illegal immigration."
