"free speech" has been redefined so often it can mean anything and everything these days. I would gladly give up a bit of "my rights" to prevent this kind of confrontation. Besides, it's a big fat waste of time that only makes people irritable. And we don't need any more irritable people.

I never thought I would argue with a liberal over whether free speech should be allowed on a public sidewalk.

I'm sorry - I actually have a lot of respect for christians, muslims, hindus whatever. Just because I have no 'faith' doesn't mean I can't and don't appreciate it in others.
I have no respect for those with a 'my way or the highway' approach to religion such as the taliban, the ayatollah and many evangelical christian groups.

You can't yell 'fire' in a crowded theater -- that much is true.
However people must be able to retain the legal right to hand out literature regardless of what is in order to keep all of our freedoms intact. You really don't mind if some of your freedoms are chipped away?! With that reasoning, perhaps you are unfit to enjoy such liberties. But the rest of us aren't - yes, even the obnoxious religious wing nuts, anti abortion picketers, pro gay marriage picketers, anti gay marriage picketers, the tea parties, pro and anti illegal immigration rallies and on and on and on. Look how many risks the citizens of Iran and earlier in China took when claiming their right to free speech. How many were killed in Tianiman Square? How many will be killed or jailed in Tehren? Never allow the government to 'chip away' at your freedoms because chipping is being done to a group you don't like. It will effect all of us and not in a good or benign way.

In this case, it is no longer a public sidewalk. It closes at 10pm. The street is the festival grounds for 3 days.

So for three days not one other person may walk down those sidewalks?

Let's just hope these Christians are open to people of different viewpoints coming in to their church on Sunday morning to hand them some information.

Christians aren't open to different Xian view point. Just go read a few posts in the Christian Forum, they have their own little holy war. They preach the Old Testament to any one who will listen, they just don't feel the need to practice what they preach.

The Supreme Court has emphasized that the streets are natural and proper places for the dissemination of information and opinion; and one is not to have the exercise of his liberty of expression inappropriately abridged on the plea that it may be exercised in some other place," the complaint said.

But she said the city decided the public sidewalks are "part of the festival grounds."

Wouldn't that be re-zoning?

Not after 10pm. Vendor's booths are there (at least in past years). Bandstands with sound equipment. Streets are closed (as the crowds walk in the road)
