Does my cilantro eating affect YOU or your breathing in any way? Cigarette smoke affects EVERYONE (smoker and non-smoker alike) who is within the vicinity of a lit cigarette. It STINKS! It affects those who are asthmatics and allergy sufferers! Secondhand smoke DOES cause lung cancer. Just because you need to light up to curb your appetite and temper does not give you the right to pollute MY air!
My mother has COPD. I have never heard a rallying cry from her to ban smoking in bars. Her & my dad go to places that are non-smoking if they can help it. They always sit in the non-smoking section. In fact, I can't recall a time in the last few years that she's complained about smoke in public places. I wonder why she, a person who has COPD, is able to refrain from complaining about smoke or demanding smoking bans, & others can't?
Should the Government (Federal, State or Local) decide whether a private business can allow customers to smoke or not within its facilities? SHould it be left up to the owner and the customers (they could always go to the place that suited their preferences the best).
Is the business location subject to paying local and state taxes? Are they required to comply with local or state health ordinances? If it is not required to by law, then the owner should be able to decide if it is a smoke-friendly venue. If the business leases it's space from a landlord, the landlord should be able to decide whether s/he wants smoking in his/her property.
I understand that smokers feel their rights being infringed upon. Imagine what it is like to have your access to a restaurant or event prevented because the smoke in that facility will trigger respiratory distress? Smoking is an option, breathing smoke free air is a God given right.
Given the cost of smoke-related illnesses in this country, and meteroic increases in health care costs, it would make sense to protect the populace from second hand smoke.

Because we don't want to develop health issues such as lung cancer or COPD.

So you're capable of deciding you want cilantro but incapable of making a decision to enter a smoking establishment. I'm confused, certainly if you could decide what you like on your food you could make such a simple decision about your personal health?

No, I believe you have repeatedly complained about the smell & your allergies. I don't recall you talking about COPD or lung cancer in any of your posts. And for the record, my mother never smoked a day in her life.

As many posters have stated, it's hard for them to find non-smoking establishments so where is the choice? Why shouldn't the government get involved when we are talking about toxic cigarette smoke in enclosed places, especially restaurants? Believe me, food does NOT taste good when there is cigarette smoke surrounding you.
