In the US just the other day, someone died in the middle of the emergency room (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-king20may20,0,6057993.story?coll=la-home-center - broken link) because the staff refused to help her. So we've got plenty of problems of our own.

Personally, I've long been in favor of universal health care, that we don't have it I think causes a lot of problems, especially within the business community. Imagine how much more competitive our labor costs would be if corporations did not have to pour thousands of dollars into health care benefits for employees.
Yeah. I had “Free” healthcare, it was called Tricare, and I was covered when I was in the Army. You ask anyone who served and their family REALLY needed it for something other minor bumps, bruises, and coughs know just how jacked up it is. That’s my experience on Universal Healthcare.

What is then a solution to the millions of people who have no healthcare? Just screw 'em? Because that seems to be the current preferred solution.

Maybe all the people without health insurance will just get sick and die. At least that would cut demand.

Don't believe the hype. Canada has its share of healthcare problems. Just because it's free doesn't mean that it's good or that it's easily accessible to all those in need.

There are loads of problem that come with "free" healthcare.

I've heard horror stories of people not even being able to get in to see the doctor. The care being free prompts many people to run to the doctor for every little thing and causes a back-up of patients. So you may be sitting in line behind oodles of people that don't have very big issues.

Canada is not doing it right. There is no perfect system out there.

I'd take Canada's system over the current healthcare system here any day. We do have insurance and when my husband hurt his back and wrist during a fall a couple of years ago, it took HUNDREDS of phone calls to get the insurance company to pay what they were supposed to pay. Even had to get human rescources involved. It was pathetic and cost us many, many hours of our time and nerves. We had been paying into this insurance for over 10 years and this was the first time we ever "used" it, for anything other than a yearly routine exam. What a crock of ****. They surely have no problem taking our money, but when it comes to time to pay out, forget it. Better be prepared to make phone call after phone call after phone call, after phone call......

I screwed up my knee this week somehow...don't know what I did...but I am sitting here with it in an immobilizer. I saw my primary on Monday. He did the referral to get an MRI done. It's tomorrow.

I was talking online to a friend who is a nurse in England and she said had I been in England, I MIGHT get an MRI about 6 months from now. Not tomorrow.

Glad I am HERE. Liz

On the other hand if you were in France, your healthcare would be free and you would have seen a doctor TODAY. ( oh and BTW the French healthcare system is rated the best in the world despite being free by the WHO).

Free and paid for by somebody else or everybody else are effectively the same for the user. France seems to be on a you pay for me and I'll pay for you program. Good idea because it spreads the risk and, if I have any idea about the French government, controls the cost.
