They'd literally drive up to each house, park halfway on the lawn, wait for the kid to leave that house, and go to the next. The neighborhood was swarming with kids and I honestly felt vehicles should not have been allowed-it was more of a safety issue than anything. I know they can't yell people they can't drive on the streets, but it would have been much more enjoyable if it were pedestrians only.
That's nuts.

I can understand parking at one end of a very long street, walking the kids down and back, then moving on to the next long street. Especially when you already drove there from another neighborhood. Plus, little kids do get pretty beat walking too far.

But, driving from one house to another? Oh... hell no.

I think one of the best neighborhoods is (Heathrow HOA) which is right off of Durant, make a right then its on the right, also easily accessible from Capital But its way up North Raleigh. One of the main streets in is Cub trail. TONS of parents and kids, and they seem to ALL participate in the Halloween festivities. The houses are decorated, the people are friendly, and there are lots and lots of kids. Its a safe and well lit neighborhood and seems to truly enjoy putting on a good time for families. I would highly recommend going there,

Gotta love technology there is several apps to track treat or treating locations.

Thanks for the posts and responses I too live out in the country and have no trick or treaters, but my son is 10 and wants so bad to go see the neighborhoods that have the festive decor and mingle with the other kids in costume. This holiday is about experiencing the joy of warm hearts of others giving to people they don't know or haven't ever seen. We can always do things to lift our immediate surrounding neighbors, but will we help out or lend our hands to the heart of the ones we don't know??? Kudos to the people who step up and remember it's not about ourselves and our beliefs as individuals but more about the joy and spirit of giving to all! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

I envy those of you with trick-or-treaters. This is our 3rd year here. We got just over a dozen kids each of those three years.

That's what I get for complaining that Florida crowds were small. I thought a townhouse complex would have plenty of action but no.

Next year, since we finish giving candy so early here, we're going to go over to a bigger place and walk around just to enjoy seeing the kids dressed up.

We hate it. It's rude, don't do it.

If you don't live in a neighborhood that participates, find an alternative.

I lived in the front of a large subdivision with two apartment complexes nearby. People drove over, parked their cars in the streets clogging it up, and we were overrun with kids. Families would do a street, then pile back in their cars and drive to the next street.

It was a mess.

Because it's just horrible that kids living in apartments would want to trick or treat in your subdivision. When people mention the loss of community it's cause of attitudes like this. TBH if you live in one of the "Halloween destination" neighborhoods you pretty much know going in that you'll be expected to follow suit with your neighbors. It's celebrating things like this which give neighborhoods their vibrancy. There are many proactive ways to limit vehicle traffic while allowing trick or treaters at the same time.

it seems like the bringing the cars into the neighborhood, and driving them around, is the big issue. We've had folks "interlope" into our small older neighborhood, but they used to park the car and, you know, WALK like we were doing. The idea of whichever adult it is, following closely in the car house-by-house or street-by-street is just unsafe.

There is still some truth that if a family lives in an apartment complex, or any "neighborhood" of more than 20 homes, that they should be able to get their trick-or-treating done in their own community.

And it should be a community event, however you define yours.

We had people come from other neighborhoods who parked their car and then walked our streets - No problem with that.

We also had people driving their cars from house to house - Unsafe, but acceptable.

But what annoyed me was a father who drove a bunch of kids hanging off the back of the tailgate of their SUV AND they drove up our driveway to drop the kids off at our door - I found this rude.

What happened to the spirit of Halloween which is to take your time and enjoy strolling from house to house. Now it seems like a race to get to as many houses as possible with whatever means possible.
