I think you meant the opposite of " ...a more excepting attitude"

Overall, think some posters have done an injustice to NC.
If you are afraid of your children witnessing Socialism it is probably best to avoid Chapel Hill and Carrboro . As to locking your doors, I do it as a force of habit, but I know people who don't do it here and have never had problems. Education in Chapel Hill-Carrboro is best in the state...part of that is a product of the very high property taxes, taxes that also fund nice parks, trails and a host of family friendly venues. I figured I would mention the taxes, because I know many self identified conservatives move to Chapel Hill and then proceed to complain about the tax burden. They are in the minority and you can usually bet on taxes going up just like they did this November. It might be something to consider, on the other hand if you don't mind taxes and an overwhelming liberal majority then Chapel Hill/Carrboro is pretty much a top notch community.

Here is the best advice I can offer up to the OP-
If you choose to, you can manifest a "conservative" lifestyle in ANY Triangle municipality. Plenty of people do it every day all over the Triangle.
The world is full of all sorts of "elements". If you want to you can avoid them-it will certainly become easier to do so once you have any idea at all as to which direstion to point your car. I am sure that if I drove around your town I could find something to appall me as well.
One more thing-go rent the movie "Grand Canyon".
