Just imagine if the OP had stepped into the wrong "element" of Durham.

Whether a white person is in a mainly black neighborhood, or vice versa, or a person with money walks into an area that is experiencing economic hardship - seemed that the attitude was negative versus more of a "love thy neighbor" mentality.
As others mentioned, you're basing your entire opinion of a city of over 100K on one incident? Would such an incident NEVER under any circumstances have happened where you are coming from?

I didn't realize Nebraska had a coast...?

However, the experience, again, was that of a bad element.

Apologies if anyone was upset with the reference - but the responses make me feel that my assumptions are accurate. Just hoping this isn't an issue throughout NC, and we'll find a good, unbiased place to settle.
Interesting that you are the one who specifically put in your header that you are "conservative", but are claiming you want somewhere "unbiased".

I don't know what it is you're looking for, but Chapel Hill is the politically liberal spot of the whole Southeast, whatever that's worth. Since you still won't come out and say whatever it was that bothered you, I might just suggest that you visit the town yourself (be sure to check out all the gas stations!) and see what the vibe is there. It is also one of the most expensive places to live in NC, FWIW.

Gee wiz, people! We are just looking for an area where we can have a similar life to the one we experience now - an area filled with transients trying to give a good life to their children. We don't have to lock our cars doors, or worry about our children witnessing racism or socialism.

Overall, think some posters have done an injustice to NC.

Socialism is a very relative term; but racism can be found pretty much anywhere. I don't quite understand why you would prefer that an area be "transient"...but that pretty much fits Cary to a T.

Chapel Hill has a very popular and widely used free bus service that is publicly funded. IDK if you are the type that would consider that "socialism" but if so then that might bother you.

Still not sure what type of elements you discovered at a gas station or a pizza joint..Air and Fire perhaps at the gas station, and fire and water at the pizza joint perhaps.

is there any place in the US where it would be smart NOT to lock your car doors?

I agree the OP has based his/her opinion on 2 very particular encounters which seems very narrow minded.

Honestly, what parent doesn't want that?

Again, I understand that you're trying to avoid specifics, but that's why the responses you've received haven't been terribly helpful. It's difficult to give a good answer when you're not even sure what the question is.

And I agree that you should be basing your opinion on more than one gas station and one pizza restaurant.

Seriously? Seriously? I don't want to see you using our roads, schools, parks, or libraries, or a myriad of other "socialist" institutions, then. And don't you dare collect unemployment if you lose your job or social security/medicaid when you get older. I sure am tired of hearing this word bandied about like it's equivalent to demon worship.

And racism begins at home. Your child sees the world through your eyes.

Moving to this area might be good for you. Sounds like you are pretty isolated from people who don't think or look just like you down there in TX. You're trying to outgroup before you even get here.

I've read through all these posts, and since we are moving there with a "blended" family, it caught my attention. Oddly, we liked the diversity we saw in Cary. We have an adopted son who is Latino, and we are white...as is our other biological child. We actually LOVED the diversity we saw all around the Triangle area, and felt very comfortable in Cary. We hung out at Bond Park, and I have to tell you, I think we saw every race and ethnicity in the children and their families that day. (maybe it was an off day when everyone got along. LOL) However, having a blended family means that we are WELL aware of "bad elements" in terms of feeling out of place in certain areas of this country. However, I have to say that it is what it is. There are ignorant, grumpy people in every city, and I really think the OP might have just happened upon a couple of disgruntled people that day. To the OP; it might be worth trying a new gas station or pizza place in Cary (since there are many) and see if you see consistency. As an outsider also relocating to the area I have to say that I think you need to check it out further. When we were here house-hunting, we encountered every "type" of person as we were visiting many establishments. We laughed at how it was almost eutopia as not ONE person was rude, didn't smile or say hello, embrace our child, welcome us, etc. Now, I know we might encounter the "bad elements" too, once we live there...but that just comes with living. It might be that you are nervous about the move, and giving up what you know and have. That is understandable, but truthfully, I think if you are a genuinely nice person, and treat others the same...you will be harder pressed to find a stranger and a "bad element" in your daily routine. This is all IMO though.
