Hi,
Spent some time in Cary this weekend. Although it seemed like a nice area on paper, the element we experienced at a local gas station and pizza place was a little uncomfortable. Without getting too specific, we realized we may want to look at Chapel Hill. Has anyone else needed to make this decision recently? if so, what did you decide and why? We will relocate from a Dallas suburb in about three months.

Thanks!

I seem to remember a very similar question within the last 3 or 4 months. search archives. you won't find many republican bumper stickers in CH but we are very family oriented community and more conservative than many would believe, especially outside the university population. but it is more expensive to live here, however schools are better.

You're going to have to be more specific. What "element" are you talking about? Where exactly were you? Did you feel fearful or just uncomfortable/out of place? It sort of sounds like you are trying to avoid saying something non-PC.

I've never been to Dallas, only to Austin (twice), but this area (Raleigh/Durham/Cary/Chapel Hill) is very diverse. What are your expectations? If you're "conservative" you may not find Chapel Hill to your liking.

Without being more specific it's hard to say... I don't find gas stations and pizza places all that different between Cary and Chapel Hill so whatever "element" you experienced in Cary most likely could occur in Chapel Hill.

We recently made this decision and went with Cary. It's hard to tell precisely what you are referring to in your post.

Cary is a decent size with a population well over 100,000. I wouldn't judge us from one pizza place. I can't imagine any establishment around this side of suburbia having an untoward "element". I would love to know exactly where you went. Was it toward Raleigh?

While we enjoy going to Chapel Hill to visit, I think dealing with that level of liberalism on a daily basis would wear on me ;-).

So you formed your opinion of Cary based on "the element" at a gas station? Good luck...lol!

I find it hard to believe that liberal/conservative people would feel different in any part of the Triangle? Am I just stupid or is this a real 'issue' ? Cant people from 'liberal' areas drive over and get gas and a slice of pizza in a 'conservative' area??
I think this is a veiled question... and I am not liking what I am reading between the lines... but maybe thats just me.

Don't fret, Chapel Hill has a slightly lower "element" population than Cary does. If that is your main concern. Chapel Hill is pretty good at keeping the "elements" in Durham.

You may really want to look into certain neighborhoods in Durham. Seriously. This could help you eliminate the elemental problems with your vision?
