Just received an ATT Gigapower notice on my door today. Need to research them and their packet sniffing. Anyone have it and care to share your feelings?
You can pay like $30-40 more per month and they won't packet sniff and run their extra ads on top of web pages. But generally, ATT is a horrible company that has allowed their infrastructure to lag while taking federal subsidy money. They've promised faster speeds for years and not really delivered until they faced competition from Google, so they won't get my business.

You could say the exact same thing about TWC though which is your only other viable option. You have to give money to one of them.
If this market is priced like Atlanta, I would still go with google, even though it's a little more expensive than what I pay for TV and internet now. More channels that I want to watch, better picture and really fast internet and most importantly NO MORE TWC!

Not when Google is operational. And as bad as TWC is, they have not taken hundreds of millions of federal dollars like ATT with the promises of improvements and not undertaken them as well as all the promises with the various mergers, while now leaving the copper infrastructure to rot. TWC has just been a greedy cable company slow to adapt to the times, which as a private business is their prerogative.
Even today, despite numerous press releases and promises of better internet service since we moved in, the fastest service I can get from ATT is still 3.0mbps down 384kbps even though I have fiber to the curb terminating in a box 50 feet from my house. At least TWC has raised their speeds above that over the last 10 years and much more in the last year.
I actually like the new Google Fiber pricing. The free internet option (with $300 install charge) reflects a business reality that it's much cheaper to hook-up all the houses a neighborhood at the same time, but it also creates some strange market forces. Competitors watch Google's progress, and try to beat them to the punch in specific areas, and lock customers in to two-year deals.
For example, an AT&T Gigapower customer shouldn't be forced to shell out $300 or pay an early-termination penalty when Google Fiber comes to their neighborhood. Customers should be able switch to Google Fiber whenever their existing contract runs out, and not have to play a game of strategic timing.
I have no inside info, but I sense that Google Fiber may be realizing that the cat-and-mouse game between competitors to reach a certain neighborhood first is kind of silly. They need to make it easy for customers with straightforward pricing, and allow them to sign-up whenever they are ready.

After waiting for a long time as I am sure most of you have, they have started to drill in my neighborhood. We have received the notice that AT&T is also coming. I'll check with the crew that is drilling if this also means Google. When I walk my dog I have noticed that groups of (mostly men) have been checking out the neighborhood. It turns out that they are people from Frontier.
My plans are to sign up for Google if it is available asap. I am not happy with Frontier. I've had it for the past 11 years. Their internet service is unreliable, slow and I usually can watch in only one TV set if I plan to use online coverage. Since I am a cord-cutter, I do use Netflix and Hulu plus.
Yesterday I received a notice via email from Frontier explaining that this is a copy of the contract with Frontier. It tells me that it goes into effect immediately and I do acknowledge this by the mere fact that I am using the service and paying my bill. Huh? There is a whole lot of legalese that follows. I never had a contract, I paid my bill for the past 11 years, that's it.
I am worried that now that ATT and Google are coming, they are trying to tie me into a long term contract where I will not be able to get access to Google unless I pay a stiff fine. Do you think that is what they are doing?

I use privacy badger and adblock so I don't see any ads. I know that doesn't stop them from seeing what I do online but I know I wont view any ads they want to deliver. It just irks me that I would have to spend extra money for them not to follow me around online.

They aren't offering the free plan in Atlanta - the cheapest service is $50/month.
