Was thinking of settling in NC, now these snake bite news makes me wonder (Chapel Hill: chapel, to live)

They don't give you the anti-venom unless your at-risk for serious complications. Most adults are fine and just need to let it run its course. It hurts like hell, though.
A single dose of the anti-venom is something like $50k. And I'm sure hospitals don't keep a large supply.
My dog has been bitten 3 times. I know a handful of people who have been bitten by copperheads, too.
How many is a handful? I personally know of only one person who was bitten by the Copperhead. One of our church members back in the early 60's was bitten while cleaning up a pile of decaying limbs in his backyard. He suffered neurological effects from the bite afterwards and committed suicide a year later. His wife said he never was the same after the bite.

Off the top of my head, a former co-worker stepped on one when taking out the trash at night, a kid in my kid's second grade class — not sure how it happened, a relative accidentally grabbed one when doing yard work at twilight (it was with a pile of sticks). I could probably think of a few more if you give me time. I have a vague recollection of some others, but just can't dredge up the details.
Moved back to NC in 1998. I have seen many snakes here. All but one were in NC Museum of Natural Science. The other one was dead in the highway. Yeah, I would not move to NC if you are afraid of snakes. LOL

Thats quite remarkable to actually know that many people. I don't know anyone who can say the same.
There are so many in my neighborhood that I won't take the trash out at night as a copperhead was under a bin once.
My neighbor and his dog were both bitten the same week! In recent weeks we've been all frantically cleaning up yard debris...
Last year my dog was pooping in the backyard next to two mating copperheads.
I hope you took a picture
