Yes...when my husband had to kill the one in our yard I stayed away. Ugh. Are you near woods? We are most likely moving back this summer and probably going to live more in town but neighborhood still backs up to woods/creek.

Woods and creek...

Hey but we have nice turtles and salamanders, too.

I live right in the middle of Chapel Hill, but it is a very wooded neighborhood. I see copperheads every summer w/o fail. Sometimes they're smushed on the road, sometimes they bite my dog (you'd think she'd learn). The other folks I talked about up thread who got bitten, one lived out in the woods (guy taking out the trash), the kid lived in the middle of Carrboro, the other person lived in Falconbridge. I really think it depends on how attuned you are to seeing snakes. I saw one the other day on a little hike in the woods. I saw one last fall on the sidewalk of a pretty busy road in Chapel Hill. I have seen a baby copperhead on the sidewalk near where Straw Valley was at New Hope Commons! Better to learn how to see them and identify them 'cause they're out there.

Now I live in Seattle and while beautiful, I hate the weather and really need to find a new place. The only nuisance to deal with in the neighborhood is deer, bunnies, mice, slugs, spiders, and seldomly coyotes, black bears and bobcats. But you rarely see bears and bobcats. Coyotes are after the pets, not people. I just went to my garage to get something and never worry about anything in there except mice. If I was in NC, would I be afraid of a snake hiding behind my luggage that I have to look out for? Threads make it sound like they're in your back yard, on the driveway, etc.

Also, we love hiking, going to the lake and mountains. If we did that in NC, would we see snakes every time? Are there certain areas you wouldn't see them? Sorry, I'm just deathly afraid of them.
the issue is with you, not where you choose to live. But you probably realize that. Alaska is pretty free of snakes, when you stay where temps > 50 are about 60 days a year. You can move to a completely urbanized area, but then you're fighting vermin, and they are actually more of a bother than snakes.

I've lived in NC for 52 years, and never been bitten. Encountered them? Naturally. Scared when I came upon one unexpectedly? Assuredly. But should I have been surprised ... not really. If you store luggage in a garage anywhere that snakes and any other critters exist, during the right temperature you should only be mildly surprised if they are HIDING there.

We do have snakes in Triangle but its depends on where you choose to live (urban downtown) and what backyard you choose. I am also from Cali where we had rattlesnakes all over, but the good news there are only two bad kinds and they don't attack unless defending.

boardjnky4 is right.
"healthy" adults get nothing for snakebite.

our flip-flop neighbor was bitten below the ankle bone (according to the docs...ANY shoe would have stopped it)
by a copperhead (she stepped on it...200+lbs...obviously killed it) and drove herself to the ER where they
kept her for 24 hours without pain meds in order not to mask symptoms. her leg swelled up enough
to take the wrinkles out, and, according to her, "hot iron on the soles of her feet" pain.
she passed out once, maybe twice. other than the puncture marks, no residual effects.

my opinion: best snake-bite kit is a car key.
