Really underestimated the amount of room needed. Basil started off great but I've discovered that lots of things like basil as much as I do. They feasted every night.
Thanks for sharing! Your garden looks awesome!

thanks for the pix. don't you wish you had made it bigger or at least made more of them? seems so big empty but quickly fills up and I usually end up wishing I had made my beds 10X bigger.

Dear NRG, the pictures of your square foot garden have inspired me to start a 4 X 4 raised bed garden of my own. I just put together the frame using your directions. I cant wait to fill it up and start planting my tomatoes this year. (P.S. It was the first time I ever bought lumber and built something with it so it is a really big achievement for me ) Thank you so much for this thread.

When we first moved here ten years ago, I decided to make a garden on the lower portion of our property where there was a good deal of sunlight. There was a huge stack of bricks down there, so I just started stacking them up to see how big I could make a raised bed. By the time I was done, it was 5x20 feet. I bought a truck full of soil from Bradsher, out on 401 at the time, which filled it about halfway. I've been amazed at how much food we've been able to grow in that thing, although it needs some renovation now. In this part of NC, raised beds are definitely the way to go.

Every pieces-and-parts on this middle-aged body of mine hurts. I ordered 50 bales of long leaf pine straw yesterday, and got the front, back, and sides of the yard mulched. So proud of myself, but SO sore.

If you Guys, like us, prefer to do your own yard work, a word of caution: check yourselves thoroughly after working with mulch -- straw or shredded wood chips. Ticks don't seem to like me, but they sure love Mr. Rdslots. He had two on him after working in the mulch with me. We are very careful to check for the little devils as he has had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever twice. We had thought RMSF was one of those things you could only contract once, but alas! Not so.

This weekend, Mr. Rdslots and a neighbor will be doing some tilling so they can put their seedlings out. My hubby made the mistake of not preparing the under-layer of his raised bed, so the roots had nowhere to grow. I am really enjoying watching the progress of your own raised beds.

I kept mine narrow enough that I could reach in and get to everything! I will ask Mr. NYer to build me another this year.
