I was wondering if I can get the untreated wood and then use a sealer on the outside to match my fence? Any potential drawbacks to doing that?
I think you should be ok as long as the stain is only on the exterior and does not come into contact with the soil. The wood should be thick enough that nothing soaks through to the other side.
FYI ~ Logan's Trading Company in downtown Raleigh will be holding a talk on how to build your own square foot garden this weekend (April 4th) during their "Spring Fling (http://http://www.logantrd.com/calendar.cfm?event_id=112&action=detail&back=all - broken link)" Event. You can read more about the free talk here: Link (http://www.logantrd.com/gardening.support.cfm?mode=listitems&subcat=54 - broken link)
Hi. My name is Jeff and I live in Matthews, NC. I went through the process of building about (8) 4'X4' plots. Got the dirt and mixed it like Mel says to do and I have a good amount of stuff growing: several types of toms, some tomatillos, several peppers, couple egg plant, cukes, squash, zuchini, okra, green beans, raspberries, strawberries and one blackberry plant, watermelon and cantelope. Also have some potato plants growing in a wire bin. It has really been fun. I've spent a lot of time on this project so far but it has been very rewarding and fun. I did a drip/spray irrigation system off my garden hose last weekend and it was very easy. I will post some pics soon and would love to share experiences with others who can provide advice and what works for OUR area. Thanks!
My tomatoes are getting pretty big! They are putting out flower buds right now. My peppers and eggplants are still inside. With the cold nights coming I thought to wait a week, but not sure if that is going to get any better. I really want to plant them. My peppers have buds that are about to open any day now. I don't think they should be inside anymore!
I have sugar snap peas that are coming up. I don't know what to do with them. Mel said plant them 9 to a square, they look fine but do they vine? I didn't think they got that tall.. Do I need to give them a stake or a cage?

Your peppers and eggplant will be fine. It will take weather closer to freezing to really damage them.
Well, NRG, I want to add my voice to the chorus thanking you for posting your experiences, directions, and pictures.
DH completed a cedar raised bed for me last weekend. It took MINUTES to pop a few tomatoes & herbs in. No more chiseling through the clay!
So far so good...

Where did you find cedar? I went to a few places and they could only special order it for me, at a very dear price considering I only needed 16 linear feet of 2-by. I ended up using untreated pine and painted the outside and top but left the inside unfinished. Everything has been in the soil for a week now and it's doing very well! Even my 4 year old is excited about eating veggies from the garden!!!
How does one set up irrigation system off garden hose?

I'm interest in seeing pics of your garden, but I'm even more interested in the irrigation system you set up off your garden hose. Do you have a timer or do you turn it on manually? I'm seriously considering this for my container plants and hanging baskets. Where did you find the info to put this together?

My husband went to Hom eDepot in Wake Forest for the cedar. It looks beautiful.
NRG I was inspired by your raised garden and made one of sorts myself. But I used a couple of downed trees I had on my property. They were about 10 in or so diameter and I cut them up into a 12ft x 17ft garden. Now I am awaiting a truckload of soil mix to fill it. I had cheated a bit and planted some tomato plants that are doing quite well in the natural mostly clay soil with some potting soiled mixed it.
So my raised garden is rustic to match the surrounding with the fallen trees that I put to good use. I figured the time they rot I will have grown approximately 32, 876 fresh tomato's, 19,326 green peppers, and 42,631 corn stocks give or take a few ears in between!
The fill will be 1.5 cubic yards of garden mix and as they say 'one wheel barrel full' at a time! ...and how will I spell relief....'Chiropractor'. But it will be worth it!
I also tried to find the potato'e' spuds with a 'e' on the end to grow but no luck! Only Dan Quayle had those some time ago!
So that is my story of the raised garden project 101! Can't wait to take the 201 coarse in a few weeks! Harvesting will be the 301 level. Canning I project will be a graduate level coarse!
