well, since there is no such thing as $200 installed (as opposed to countertop or freestanding) full size dishwasher, I would argue that it does affect resale value, because now you are trying to sell a house without a dishwasher. Unless I was buying with an intent to do an immediate kitchen reno, a house with no dishwasher would get crossed off my list without even bothering to go look at it in person.

She's not that far off...$339 is what they start at Home Depot. I'd bet if one scoured for a deal, especially not during COVID shortages, it's doable.

Interesting, you'd be willing to pass on a great house costing hundreds of thousands of dollars that didn't happen to have a dishwasher because you wouldn't want to spend a few hundred dollars post sale? To each their own I guess.

Good idea! The fridge is about 15 years old and I may not be able to get any (the fridge doesn't actually have handles, just trim). But if I ever get another white one, I'm going to try to remember that idea.

That's true, I'm seeing...those "cafe" appliances are so pretty, but so expensive...but I'm not sure they cook any better! lol

I've been told that you can't sell a house where the place to install a dishwasher exists but is left empty and that it's not like a fridge or a washer and dryer, where you can have the hook ups in place, but you can sell without the actual appliance.

So assuming what I was told is correct, it means if there is no dishwasher, the space to put one along with the plumbing and the electrical wiring, doesn't exist. In that case, it's not just spending whatever amount on buying a dishwasher, it's paying to remodel the kitchen to have room, the plumbing, and the electrical in place to install one. So yes, I would not choose to have to do that kind of work in a house unless I was already planning on doing a kitchen remodel.

well, since that's almost double $200, I'm standing by saying that there is no such thing as a $200 dishwasher. Esp. because we are living during COVID shortages, so pretending we aren't doesn't mean it's a realistic number.

Yes, that was my thought at first, but then I got to figuring up how old the fridge is also...seems like it's about 15 years old. *sigh* I am not in a financial position to buy a whole matching set of appliances nor even replace them one by one with high-end stuff.

I think I've definitely decided against black...I just don't like it.

It’s a pretty straight forward hookup, even without an existing one in place. The water is split off your faucet underneath, and the drain gets tied into the sink’s. The easiest part is plugging it in where your garbage disposal is.

I put one in as a stopgap until I completely gut the kitchen. It’s currently on the other side of a small cabinet my trash is in under 2’ from the sink. I built a wood cabinet with a butcher block top for it to go in.

Coming from an apartment that had one it was a must for my wife. I on the other hand wasn’t allowed to use ours as a kid and had to do all the dishes by hand so I rarely used it. When house shopping it was very to easy to point out where one one go (like ours). I wouldn’t pass (and didn’t) on an otherwise great house because it doesn’t currently have a dishwasher.

For the record, I got this one free for helping a friend carry his new one up the stairs and install it (which he got free as a realtor because it didn’t convey). Before this came about I was shopping them at Sears Outlet and Pacific Sales and found plenty in the $200 range that maybe had a side scratch (that you’d never see).

I also checked out Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook marketplace, etc, and practically new ones that go for $600-$800+ would consistently be well under $200. People are always remodeling houses around us and are taking out perfectly good (and new) appliances because it’s not the color they wanted when they bought the house, or are always redoing their kitchen. I have GC friends who’ve redone the same houses multiple times.
