I think STD stats have been used as a scare tactic.

I was wanting to say the same thing... Within some STD statistics and propaganda, sex is compared to crimes like Russian Roulette, drinking and driving and there are pock-marked lepers walking around us (I do wonder if some have actually educated themselves on what STDs, like HSVII actually, are).
I am not denying STDs are out there... However, it is a class of communicable diseases that have the stigma all it's own to maintain fear. It has risen to the level of paranoia.
If we removed the shame, we would be able to address them faster and more effectively.

Once I spent the time to show what some "statistics" really mean, working on some data from a website which was breaking down the "facts" by demographics. The chance of catching an STD from a Caucasian heterosexual male turned out to be actually slim to none. Naturally, nobody said "peep" to this post because you can't fight numbers. It's a whole lot easier to use pathetic preaching based on "info" from the paid-to-instill paranoia media!
Ha, ha, I don't know many sexually responsible adults because they all think that using condoms during intercourse is an iron clad solution to std's. Yet, when they engage in oral, nothing is used. NOT ONE person I've ever met used dental dams or condoms during oral except on pc porn films. Now that's a big chunk outta the sex routine most of you like to do with strangers, yet it falls by the wayside with the idea that AIDS isn't transferred orally although it could be if there are open wounds or soft tissue. Not to mention all the other viruses waiting for an entrance way and what is better than a warm orifice for it to thrive as it doesn't know the difference from one or the other.
There is a new strain of gonorrhea that is transmitted orally as well as the usual ways. And it's great no one here is tested positive but does that mean it's a 100% chance no ever will? I'd hate to be that, "Ooooh, hmmm...". Still, most will ignore it blissfully and continue playing russian roulette with their bodies.

And they are willing to talk about it if something comes up for them without shame, maybe some return frustration disguised in anger, but without shame. A sexually responsible adult gets tested. A sexually responsible adult actually knows what to look for on certain things that have visible symptoms. A sexually responsible adult knows risks and consequences.
If I were you, I would start mingling a little more with sexually responsible adults.
Again, I do not deny STDs are out there and I am cautious and a realist to know how to get tested.

Exactly!! Fear mongerers trying to control and ostrocize others is the real problem. The lack of openly discussing sex is responsible for the issue. Amazingly I know of more people with DWIs than those that have had any STD.

DWI's are public knowledge because they're generally in the newspaper and even if they're not, you can find the info. No one is going to openly admit to you they have an STD.
