Yes, I do and it is sad. They both are terribly shy, but incredibly gifted, sweet and hilariously funny. They just lack the nerve to approach a woman in any way. Yes, it is voluntary, but also sad because I know they would find a mate if they could just overcome whatever it is that is holding them back.
I am 47, male and a virgin. Never have had the desire to have sex honestly. I tried to back in my 30s a few times, but nothing was able to happen. I do have aspergers and I do think that contributes to it as my social skills are poor at times. But otherwise have a great job, etc. At this stage in my life I am perfectly fine without sex as it is something that never crosses my mind on a daily basis.

They sound a lot like me. Women just seem unapproachable to me. As I have stated before I meet women by being introduced, or by being seated in a class or in my photo arts group which seems to breed conversation. In these areas women actually like me. but approaching women I do not know because they all appear unapproachable seems a fool's errand. Case in point, i have noticed women at the gym looking at me usually they have no idea that I know. But once in a while a woman realizes I know and quickly turns away as if I did something wrong. This behavior puzzles me and I would never consider approaching them ever.
I don't know any 40 year old virgins, at least not for certain. Also, I wonder if there are really more male 40 yr. old virgins out there or are they the only ones answering?

Do you mind expanding on the "tried" part? Do you mean that you were intimate with a woman and that you simply couldn't get it up? I ask because this could be medical.

Most normal women like to be approached. Just say hi. Next time you see her you can ask her about her day and let her ramble on. Baby steps. Also I suspect most people meet their significant others through friend, family, school or work settings. So wouldn't beat yourself up over not being able to approach women. Do you have any social networks you can exploit to meet women?
All I can say is that for a guy, being a virgin for that long, that is one strong willed dude! I don't see how any dude who hasn't had sex can get through his 20's without killing poeple, destroying property, etc.
