I have an idea, I think marriage license should be limited to 10 yrs and requires renewals like passports. This way it gives couples an exit or a renewed vow to stay longer together. Sure, children complicates things but just like a failed marriage.
If things aren't working out after 10 yrs, a couple decides not to renew a marriage license is the same as a divorce anyways. Atleast there is closure and people can move on and not being stuck in their marriage forever.
not just kids, but all the STUFF you accumulate in 10 years ---- division would be just like a divorce; marriage renewal would just be an added problem
People aren't stuck in their marriage forever, that's what divorces are for.
Divorces are nasty and expensive. Having a set expiration of marriages fulfills this without the nasty fighting. You must come to terms for a marriage license renewal or let it go.
There are men and women who are stuck in their marriages because it's too costly to go through a divorce or they're afraid a divorce will ruin their lives.

.... Am all for a moment-by-moment renewal... for that's what it takes for a successful marriage. It's certainly not like having an on-&-off switch, simply leaving it switched on. Takes constant work, & well worth the effort if you two are growing together. That, & making it more difficult to get married in the first place. Way too easy, so many having no real idea what they are doing (that included myself).
That would just result in sanctioning more hypergamy among women as they would use the ten year point as a reason to transition to what they subjectively view as a better spouse.
The same could occur with men, but it is more likely that women (attractive women) would benefit the most from marriage terms like that.
