Do online dating sites really work and is it pathetic to use them? (wife, movies)

They're great. The quality of my dating life shot through the roof in my 30s when they started to come about. I had some great relationships from them, met a ton of people that became lovers and later great friends. I'll definitely use them again when I'm looking again.

Are most people looking for something long term online?

I met a guy once that lied about his height online. Don't lie about your height. It's very obvious when you show up for a date that you are 5'3 and not 6' tall and yes, I will notice.
I mostly did online dating for a month or two after a breakup because I moved away on a whim and realized I was bored. It didn't really pan out because of the short guy, and guy with kid who had a fascination with haunted houses, and then I ended up meeting a human man in real life... but then the details get boring.

My 28 year old son broke up with his previous GF of 4 years. He was pretty sad and afraid to start to date again.
I encouraged him to just try a dating site. Lo and behold, he and the girl he met there 3 years ago got engaged last Saturday. She is absolutely wonderful for him and they are so happy. He never ever would have met her any other way.
Not saying it is going to be that way for most people, but in some cases it works like a charm. i also have two very good (older) friends who met their spouses there.

They are not pathetic at all I actually find them to be quite useful for trying to find the right candidate and its convenient because you can use them at your own pace

Good to know, maybe pathetic was the wrong word to use.
I think online dating is geared for people who are very special.
