i disagree. I reckon confidence is inner feeling, which translates to outer feeling.
I was in a bar tonight with a friend, and she asked whether her top looked OK since she didn't want people look. to me, let them look (if I were in her position). I acknowledge that people will judge, but as long as I am comfortable in myself, what other issue is there?

exactly! I was in a bar today/tonight... NO make up, crazy lady messy hair, dressed like a slob, and drank for almost 10 hours without buying ONE drink....... they just wanted to be around the silly.
Listen and be interested in what she says. Always be fully mindful and present when you're with a woman. Respond with sincerity and a great sense of humor goes a long way.
What probably keeps you back is you're probably a very cerebral, practical, technical and logically thinking person. Thing is, many women tend to think in a very non-logical, non-technical and non practical fashion.

I think hard sciences are geeky. I prefer social sciences better.

To add to your list-join a hiking club. Seriously, there is a hiking club near me that is nearly 50/50 male to female. Of course, that's a moot point for me as I'm married.
Also, I'm sure it's been brought up, but don't appear to be on the hunt. Just put yourself in situations to meet people and have a good time, the rest takes care of it's own. Women are VERY perceptive and will play some serious mind games if they know you are there for one thing only. Desperation is pretty much a dealbreaker for any decent women.
