I've done door knocking, to spread the message of the gospel. The last time was probably about 6 years ago, before I became a hard core Christian universalist. The response is very poor. Now I wouldn't do it.
But I was in a church once where over about 12 weeks we went out onto an estate to do similar. All the people in the church were behind it. And the thing was that every week in the meetings people were getting saved and having real deep healings; eg. tears, release, and the rest of it. Then it all stopped.
I can absolutely vouch for a correlation between a group of believers being of one heart and mind about something such as reaching out in service, to help people, and there being solid results you could hang your hat on. ...I appreciate it isn't perceived as 'helping people' where a message about God's love (or the salvation narrative) is involved, but God was absolutely behind it and brought about the results that he wanted to.
As for non-believers door knocking, I'd be happy to talk shop with them. Perhaps we could become friends and have reasonable discourse. There's got to be the time of day for talking about how to be in the world. Just watch out when you start loving and serving one another - it can get messy real quick.
I would love to have atheists come by and hang out for awhile. I love atheists, just as much as I love other Christians. I never got into the door knocking thing either, unless it was one of those knock 'n run things I did when I was younger. Or Halloween.
Trans and I will come around...but do you have any babies we can eat for lunch??

I'm sure that Muslims, Hindus and a myriad of other religions could vouch for the same.
I've actually encountered door-knockers with issues/agendas that are non-Christian and even anti-Christian. It's probably due to the part of the country where I currently/unfortunately live. We shouldn't assume that that never happens, because it does.
Personally, I can't stand solicitors of any kind. That includes phone solicitations, mail solicitations, or any other annoyances and unrequested communications.
Interacting within a public context is one thing, but trying to go from public into a private setting is crossing a line.
Had one come by a couple weeks ago. It was a mother with her 13ish daughter. She was wanting to discuss the Bible. She asked if I noticed how bad the world was getting. I informed her that her Bible wasn’t going to fix anything and was wasting her time with me. Had I been dressed and my Christian wife not there, I would have liked to educate her on her Bible. I might even had asked how much her husband was going to sell(not to me)her daughter for.
I remember reading about this Christian group -- I believe they were in California -- who petitioned a local judge to gain permission to hand out Christian literature outside the high school as the kids were leaving to go home.
The petition was granted and so this Christian group began handing out their pamphlets.
However, the very next day, a group of Wiccans showed up and began handing out *their* literature.
LOL!
Needless to say, the Christian group was furious so they marched back to the judge -- who told them, hey, if Christians are allowed to do it, so are members of every other religion.
Which makes me think that, in certain places, an atheist knock on the door would send some of these people into orbit.
I would never do such a thing.
Like someone else said, I can't stand unsolicited phone calls, door knocks, or mail -- though at least with mail, I don't have to deal with an actual person. I'm really tired of the plethora of scam-charities calling me, those fake Indian Microsoft employees trying to trick me into having them fix my computer, and whatnot.
I don't mind sometimes, though. It can be an interesting debate.
However, thankfully, atheists aren't required to do that.

Nah....you just frequent religious message boards to insult, harass, and attack people. That’s safer and les direct than actually looking someone in the eye and talking to them.

Where are these "religious message boards" you mentioned?

This is a message board titled "Religion and Spirituality". It's about religion and spirituality. Is there anything else I can explain?
Honestly, I cannot imagine having nothing better to do than that. Most of the atheist crowd around here adds nothing to the actual discussion. They are not asking questions, they are not discussion. They are insulting and calling us names. There is actually a thread talking about how religion traumatizes people. Good grief, this is insane.

Not really. I've known of a few cases. My ex wife exibeted negative negative symptoms.
